Ortus Gentium

Description
Latest update: 5/13/2025
Current version: v1.0.0.7.5

Introduction
'This present Transaction shall serve for a perpetual Law and establish'd Sanction of the Empire.'
- The Peace of Westphalia

With the echoes of the Black Death still propagating across much of Eurasia, systems of old have begun to show their cracks and decay, even if they are not yet extinguished. In the world of Christendom, the English Kings have all but lost the Hundred Years' War to a France that, despite still being a decentralized state, has begun to institute more direct means of control. At the same time, the Habsburgs, long divided, prepare to reunify in the midst of the rise of a child king and dominate the husk of the Holy Roman Empire, and the Three Spains, especially Portugal, seek to upend the commercial status quo of centuries for their own gain.

However, far more concerning to these states in large part is the emergence of a centralized Muslim state, the Sublime Porte of the Ottoman Empire, who has just slain the young King of Poland and Hungary at Varna after the Polish-Hungarian union with Papal approval broke their truce with the Turks. Now, with Hungary and Poland dazed and seeking rulership, the House of Osman's ambitions grow all too apparent as the last stronghold of the Rhomans is encircled.

Likewise, the order of old has begun to show signs of dissolving on the Steppe, where Muscovy grows increasingly powerful and the heirs of Berke Kkan continue to splinter and squabble, whilst the Khans of Moghulistan attempt to maintain unity as the Timurids teeter on the edge of a second civil war. Much of the Levant has fallen to Turcomen federations named after sheep as the Delhi Sultanate continues to splinter and the Ming dynasty begins to enter into a period of consolidation as Japan prepares to plunge into Senjoku Jidai.

Likewise, the Sultans of Morocco have found themselves puppets of their advisers as Portugal turns their gaze southward, the Zayyanids have become nothing more than a pawn of whomever has the biggest stick, all whilst the Hafsids, preparing to end much of their dynastic clashes of the past decades, march westward, seeking to establish a Caliphate to rival the Abbasids within their Gilded Cage under the careful watch of the Mamluk Sultanate, which is increasingly becoming stuck in tradition, all whilst the Mali Empire continues to fragment and the Horn of Africa falls into a cold war as the Oromo eye more valuable lands.

Meanwhile, the lands of the west, whilst isolated from much of the mayhem of the old world, have far from escaped the winds of change, as sizable realms form for the first time in centuries in Mesoamerica and the Andes with the Mexica Triple Alliance subjugating their neighbors and the Cusco preparing to unify their mountain home.

The old world is dying as new forces emerge and will continue to emerge, and the new world has not yet been born.
Now is not the time of monsters. It is the time of the birth of nations, the time of Ortus Gentium.

Synopsis
Ortus Gentium is an borderline vanilla+ overhaul/total conversion mod that seeks to not only deliver new content and flavor to countries that may have lackluster content or none at all in vanilla through the tools PDX has used as of late, but to use the base mechanics of EU4 to tell the stories of the various states and struggles of the Early Modern Era. Not just using mission trees, flavor events, disasters, unique government mechanics, and even new vanilla-adjacent mechanics akin to what one could have seen in the earlier EU4 DLCs but with a modern design philosophy, ultimately creating a blend of vanilla+ with the total conversion charm of Anbennar in a way which may keep the lights on for this game long into the future.

FAQ
What DLCs do I need to play this mod?
  • It is recommended to play with all DLCs, as Ortus Gentium relies heavily on certain DLC features, and as such, support can not be provided barring minor DLC such as Guns, Drums, and Steel. Whilst I understand that the total cost of all the DLC is prohibitive, the monthly subscription service or the occasional bundle may prove an affordable alternative should you choose that path.
Is this mod Ironman compatible?
  • Due to the limits of EU4's checksum checks, this mod is not and never can be Ironman-compatible. However, you can still play in Ironman mode, and there are mod achievements.
What languages are supported?
  • Presently, only English as I am unfortunately monolingual and SrUca, the resident Spaniard, is too busy to translate the entire mod. However, translation assistance is welcome, and any CN translation will receive official support to the best of my capabilities.
Is this compatible with X mod?
  • If it is not a non-UI editing graphics mod, assume it is not. You will not receive support in this case.

what's the best nation to play to form Austria? tried Stryia and Austria so far and they are fine, one other thing is that France mission tree is extremely overpowered compared to Austria's as France I was able to conquer İtaly with My avignon papacy, get Spain and Portugal as my PU's and own all of lowlands and Burgundy by 1550, while completing most of my missions, Austria just seems like a struggle and other nations being so unchained from such reality makes it frustrating to play, uniqe and beautiful experience either way, looking forward to see what Ottoman missions and systems are going to look like

Hello there very interesting mod, do you plan to make a 2k version of your mod ?

Thank you for this mod, probably in the top 5 eu4 games I have had in terms of fun and engadement. Was a bit buggy playing as france, as French wars of religion UI button never went away, apart from that it was really fun. I really hope you do keep working on this, as this historical experience where I spent more time on internal affairs was really refreshing. Thanks!

A followup, perhaps add a decision to end the Fronde via decision instead of event as it'd be easier to handle if this crops up again lol

I've been having an issue where The Fronde disaster fired twice as France. The second time it's not spitting out any Fronde-related events and has been ongoing for like 20 years. Anyone know the event id to end it manually?

Planning to reboot the codebase in the next update due to the current version's kudzu plant-esque web of bugs, which will also be the Ottoman/Byzantine update. :)
Apologies for all the issues! The mod was in development over the course of *5 game updates* and was a learning experience, so it is an entire tangled mess.

But I plan to make it as good as possible!
