Demand Tribute

Description
📯 Demand Tribute – A Tribute System Mod

Ever wanted to rule like a true steppe warlord, extracting wealth from your lessers without moving a finger? This mod adds new diplomatic tools for acquiring tributaries — no longer having to resort to war like a fool!

⚔️ Features:

1. Demand Tribute Interaction
  • Target neighboring rulers to demand tribute, much like nomads do.
  • Not available against herders – Can't harm Nomads’ bread and butter.
  • On success, the target becomes a tributary, paying regular tribute while retaining autonomy.

2. Release Vassal as Tributary
  • Convert an existing non-de jure vassal into a tributary.
  • Useful for trimming realm size, reducing management overhead, or roleplaying a looser, more decentralized empire.
  • Only available if the vassal doesn’t hold de jure territory under your titles.

3. Permanent Tributaries (New!)
  • Subjugate or demand permanent tributary status.
  • Works like a normal subjugated tributary, but is inherited by your heir!
  • Higher prestige cost to subjugate and higher reluctance when demanding.
  • Also available when releasing vassals
  • Note: AI does not use these options to avoid disruptive gameplay.

4. Pledge Tribute as Vassal (New!)
  • You can now rerquest to become a tributary.
  • For this to be available you must be a non de jure vassal.
  • Note: AI does not use this interaction to avoid disruptive gameplay.

can you integrate tributaries into regular vassals?

I tried adding it as a game rule, but it ended up crashing the game, so I’m guessing it’s not possible. :(

is it possible to add to the permanent tributary to have the suzerain's name overlayed on it like the tribal tributaries?

@BBCMGTOW I don't understand your request. You can just release the tributary, and if you are one, you can simply cease paying tribute :).

possibility of adding an option to refuse tribute/cancel it which leads to a war which if you win removes your tributary?

Thank you so much for the fix!

The issue has been resolved. You now correctly gain a permanent tributary when using the casus belli :).

@Harfagri I’ll take a look when I have some time. It shouldn’t be too hard to fix.

Love this mod, however, winning permanent tributary CB seems to only establish non-permanent contract and cannot be inherited.

@Tig Biddies That's actually how it was implemented in vanilla. The main factor that determines their willingness to become tributaries is their personality. A callous and ambitious duke won’t pay tribute just because you have 10k more troops. If you're stronger than them and they refuse, you can always use the casus belli :).
