5-3-2 High Press Counter-Attack

Description
This 5-3-2 (or 3-5-2) high-press counter-attacking system is ideal for newly-promoted teams. As long as squad depth allows for sustained pressing throughout most of the season, it offers a realistic chance of finishing near the top of the league, or even securing European qualification. In cup competitions, it’s competitive against any opponent.

Tactical Core
The two strikers are not tied to fixed roles, but should fulfill these key functions:
  • One should act as a support striker (e.g., target man, false nine, or deep-lying forward);
  • The other should serve as the focal point of counter-attacks, constantly attacking the space behind the defense and pulling defenders out of position.
Both strikers will be able to receive crosses at varying heights. A support role doesn't limit scoring potential. Even top teams can adopt this setup — in that case, a complete forward is the ideal profile.

The roles of the two central midfielders (MEZ, BBM) can be adjusted based on match context. At least one should have the ability to make underlapping runs and connect with the forward line.
  • Against teams with strong central blocks but weak flanks, one CM can shift into a more wide-oriented role (e.g., Carrilero) to support overlapping wing-backs and help overload wide areas.

Though deployed alone, the defensive midfielder (DM-Su) can press aggressively within the high block structure, focusing on disrupting and intercepting in midfield.
  • The three centre-backs and two wing-backs offer strong cover in retreat;
  • High pressing and counter-pressing restrict the opponent's build-up options;
  • This role isn't about passive shielding — it's about immediately applying pressure and cutting off midfield distribution routes.

The two complete wing-backs (CWB-A) are the primary sources of width and vertical progression in this tactic.
  • They are granted creative freedom to attempt crosses, through balls, or cut-ins in advanced areas;
  • They’re instructed to stretch the play wide, opening space for midfield runners and forward combinations.

Transfer Strategy
This system heavily relies on wing-backs — don’t hesitate to invest them. While much has been said about the support striker, your Advance Forward should ideally have top-tier physical and finishing attributes, as these are heavily weighted in CA distribution. Wing-backs, linking midfielder, and the supporting striker all need decent ball control — whether it’s aerial strength and physicality, or agility and dribbling.
