PEDIA
As the core founder of Japan's post-World War II revival, Yoshida Shigeru reshaped the fate of this defeated country with his realistic political strategy and "economic priority" concept. Yoshida Shigeru, who came from a prominent family, had a dual family background. His biological father, Takeuchi Tsuna, was a pioneer of the freedom and civil rights movement, and his adoptive father, Yoshida Kenzo, was a Yokohama business tycoon. His dual family background laid a resource network across the political and business circles for him. In his early diplomatic career, he traveled to Northeast China, Italy, Britain and other places, forming a pro-Western perspective and advocating dependence on Europe and the United States to safeguard Japan's interests.
After Japan's defeat in 1945, Yoshida Shigeru returned to politics with his close relationship with General Douglas MacArthur, the commander-in-chief of the Allied Forces in Japan. During the formation of the cabinet in 1946, he used delaying tactics to force the United States to promise emergency food aid to alleviate the domestic famine crisis. This move became a microcosm of his governing philosophy of "compromise for survival". By signing the San Francisco Peace Treaty and the Japan-US Security Treaty, he restored national sovereignty on the surface, but in fact legalized the long-term presence of US troops and acquiesced to the US's right to exercise military intervention when Japan was in turmoil. This strategic compromise won Japan room for development under the Cold War pattern, allowing national resources to focus on economic reconstruction.
During his tenure, Yoshida Shigeru implemented the Yoshida line of "light armaments, heavy economy", resisted the pressure from the United States to rearm Japan, and concentrated fiscal investment on the revival of the industrial system. He led the reduction of the military budget, transformed old military industrial enterprises into civilian production, and accelerated industrial upgrading through technology introduction agreements. After the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, Japan became a logistics base for the US military, taking this opportunity to achieve economic recovery. By the time he stepped down in 1954, Japan's industrial output value had exceeded the pre-war level, laying the foundation for the subsequent "economic miracle".
In 1967, Yoshida Shigeru died of illness and was baptized as a Catholic after his death. His policy legacy is full of complexity: on the one hand, education reform and the policy of building a country based on science and technology have promoted Japan to become a modern power; on the other hand, the security dependence on the United States has led to Okinawa and other places being under the rule of the US military for a long time, and the transfer of sovereignty has caused continuous controversy. He criticized militarism and acquiesced to the continuation of some colonial legacies; he created economic prosperity and shaped Japan's international image as an "economic giant and political dwarf". Choosing the Yoshida route means accepting this heavy legacy - trading dignity for time for revival, or gambling on national destiny and confronting the powerful head-on? When the steel frame of Tokyo Tower pierces the sky, the answer is buried deep in the whistle of Yokohama Port that never fades away.
