The ED72 is a four-car electric multiple unit. The first units of this series were equipped with the same motors as the EN57. It was only later that higher-power motors began to be used. The ED72 features new-type Westinghouse brakes.

From the outside, the ED72 resembles the latest version of the EN57, although some innovations are noticeable, such as half-pantographs (which were later replaced with standard ones). Higher-numbered ED72 units are also equipped with pixel displays on the fronts of the cars, and the last unit in the series, ED72-021, features new sliding-plug doors.

The most significant change, however, occurred inside the train. In the control car, which lacks a brake pump, a first-class compartment was arranged, featuring three rows of comfortable airline-style seats. Unfortunately, this is the only part of the ED72 where passenger comfort has significantly improved. The other compartments resemble those of the EN57, though the new soft seats and relatively neat interior are worth noting.

Unfortunately, the ED72 still more closely resembles the EN71 rather than trains used for InterRegio (IR) services in Western Europe.

Due to their identical operating parameters, ED72 units can be coupled with EN57 and EN71 units. Such formations frequently operate Polish InterRegio (IR) trains.


ED72 jest czterowagonową jednostką. Pierwsze egzemplarze tej serii posiadały takie same silniki jak EN57. Dopiero później rozpoczęto stosować silniki wyższej mocy. ED72 posiada hamulce nowego typu Westinghouse.

Z zewnątrz ED72 przypomina ostatnią wersję EN57, chociaż i tu widać nowości w postaci połówkowych pantografów (później zmienianych na normalne). Wyższe numery ED72 posiadają także wyświetlacze pikselowe na czołach wagonów, a ostatni z serii ED72-021 również nowe drzwi odskokowo-przesuwne.

Największa zmiana zaszła jednak w środku zespołu. W wagonie rozrządczym, w którym nie ma pompy hamulcowej, urządzono przedział pierwszej klasy z trzema rzędami wygodnych foteli lotniczych. I niestety jest to jedyna część ED72, w której poziom wygody pasażerów znacznie wzrósł. Pozostałe przedziały przypominają te z EN57, chociaż warto podkreślić nowe miękkie siedzenia i dosyć schludne wnętrze.

Niestety ED72 dalej bardziej przypomina EN71 niż pojazdy służące do obsługi pociągów IR w zachodnich krajach Europy.

Zespoły ED72 ze względu na takie same parametry jazdy mogą i są łączone z EN57 i EN71. Często takie składy obsługują polskie pociągi IR.
