Claiming new home islands
By ines
Short guide on how to claim a new home island and have multiple home islands.

Your islands are tied to your character. You can only spawn one home per world BUT you can have multiple homes, here is how:

  1. Despawning your home allows you to claim another home with a kite. Your despawned home is not lost, you can spawn it again. More details below.

  2. It's not clear what the maximum number of home islands you can claim is —or if there even is a limit.
Since there is no "Delete Home Island" option in the inventory menu anymore, the only way to remove a claimed island is by modifying the game files.
Claiming a new home island
STEP 1
Go to the last tab in Inventory (I) and choose "despawn home island": the message "Player island is gone" will pop up and you will be placed on a random island closeby. DO NOT use "delete home island"

STEP 2:
Build a home kite on your new unclaimed island. Make sure you are on the right one.

STEP 3:
Claim the island using the home kite and give it a name

Tadaa, this is now also your home. Continue reading on how to get your previous island back.
Spawning your other home
You can get your previous home back very easily with these steps

STEP 1:
To spawn a home island, your current one needs to be despawned. Go to the last tab on the right in Inventory (I) and choose "despawn home island". You will be placed on a random island closeby.

STEP 2:
Go to the last tab in Inventory (I) again and choose one of your homes

Deleting (temporarily vs permanently)

Outdated but included for context. Delete home island menu option was removed. Keep reading on how to delete a home island permanently using the game files.

Temporarily delete home island from the server
With the button in the middle “Despawn home island”, you temporarily remove your island from the server you are currently using. It will remain with your character and can (and will) therefore be reloaded on the same or another server.

Important: NO new confirmation message is displayed. As soon as you press the button, your island will disappear and you will randomly spawn at a different location. You should therefore save all your resources beforehand if you want to move to a new island, for example.

Permanently delete home island (no longer linked to your character)
With the lower button “Delete home island”, you delete your island completely and it is no longer connected to your character. However, this button will prompt you to check whether you are sure. This means that permanent deletion should not happen. However, be careful when using this option. After confirming the deletion, you will appear at a random location.

You can both delete and rename home islands by going to;

C:\Users\NAME\AppData\LocalLow\Astrolabe Interactive\Aloft\Data01\Characters\CHARNAME\HomeIslands.

However the new name will only show up when spawning in your island, when you despawn it, it will still say the previous name. Additionally, if you change the file while you have the island spawned it will create a duplicate.
Tips
General
  • Look at the island through the telescope. If it has a 'KG' icon, it's too massive to use as a sailing island.
  • The amount of animals you can bring home without them being overcrowded is determined by the size of your island.
  • Having a water source on your island, very useful
  • Use the field guide to check how many trees are required for your island to be healthy. Island ecology needs to be 100% to be able to set sail.

Creative uses
  1. Claim a small island to navigate the rock barrier more easily. You can dodge the exploding rocks more easily. Additionally, the smaller your island, the faster you'll sail.

  2. Claim a big island for all your building desires. You don't need enough sails to claim it. You could leave it immobile —spawning it in when you want— while using a different explorer island to zip around the world.

Very helpful guide, thanks! I disagree about ~needing~ water on an island but that's not a criticism, just a different perspective. If you want a pond or waterfall as decor, I agree.

For cooking, crafting, and watering crops, well, I can gather about 250 water in less than a minute, then just store it in a crafting-enabled container. The islands we visit often have water so topping off my supply when needed is just another minute of gathering. And a tiny basket of water lasts me quite a while!

I'm still hesitant to claim a big island because I don't know if I am going to hit the maximum (I have 4 now). I realized too late that I can't delete the island I claimed in making the guide, since I am on Macbook streaming with GFN (aka can't access my game files and delete). So what if the limit is 5 and I come across a better island lol

PS Thanks, I added it in the tips section 😊

I have done this. I have an island with each type of resource node that I claimed, a big Island (it takes up almost all of the island size bar), and a tiny fast island for the barrier or traveling long distances. It is worth noting that in order to sail any island you have to have the ecology at 100%.

You cannot claim the fresco islands, as most of those are multiple little islands that are loosely connected. The enormous islands (one where you would find 3-4 infection nodes) won't let you either, but you still have a pretty wide selection of isalnds. My main (crafting/farming/etc) island is actually one with a knowledge anchor on it and I think it looks pretty cool when I sail it around.
