Doctrines last for the entire duration. They are awesome.
The Space Marines are simplest to play, but one of the harder factions to win against Impossible. I recommend using the guide but starting one difficulty (or two) lower until you've figured out the optimization and micromanagement needed for this faction. Also, if you don't have all the DLCs (except Ultima), then you're fighting uphill with the Marines because you're missing two critical units for winning.
That, or I suck. Probably the latter.
