Description
He’s back again and about time too and this time he’s in the mood. Diddy Kong from the Donkey Kong Country series returns to Rivals of Aether for Donkey Kong Country’s 30th anniversary in a new modern version, carrying a moveset heavily based on his Smash Bros iteration but with a few tweaks to how some of the moves work for Rivals of Aether and some sounds and sprites which give him a lot more flavour from the Donkey Kong Country games as well as Donkey Kong 64.

Diddy is a bait and punish character who is based around his banana peel as stage control, a versatile tool that he can pick up, carry and throw around as well as hit around with his attacks. Smash players will be right at home with this character but there are some changes worth nothing.

Neutral Special: Peanut Popgun

For his neutral special he wields a gun! With his pistol out he’s one tough Kong! Quickly firing the peanut popgun will shoot a peanut that’s affected by gravity at a weak range. Hold the special button down to lower the firing angle as well as increasing the speed and damage of the peanut. Holding the button down for too long will see the popgun explode in Diddy’s face, any opponents caught in that explosion will receive major knockback and damage.

In Rivals this move doesn’t provide throwable peanuts when they hit the ground, instead the peanuts immediately break. The peanuts can be used to shoot at far away banana peels to reposition them and take ownership of them.

Forward Special: Monkey Flip

Diddy leans back and does a backflip with some forward momentum. Compared to Smash this move doesn’t provide the same vertical lift of momentum and the grab is active for a lot less time. However this move is a LOT more versatile than in Smash. On successful grab, instead of the usual command grab Diddy will simply grab the opponent in place. Inputting a direction while grabbed will perform one of four directional throws (these are Diddy’s Smash Bros throws) while pressing the jump button will see Diddy footstool the opponent. If an input isn’t pressed in time Diddy will fall off the grabbed opponent.

If you are in a Monkey Flip when you are next to the banana Diddy will automatically grab the banana peel. You can also cancel the Monkey Flip by pressing the attack or special button and Diddy will turn it into a flying kick.

Up Special: Rocketbarrel Boost

He can fly real high with his jetpack on! This move allows Diddy to put on his jetpack from Donkey Kong 64 to fly back onto the stage. Hold the Special button down to increase the amount of time you can fly for. Diddy’s flight is free form and controllable by the control stick or the buttons and he will be able to rotate his trajectory while flying. Diddy can fly horizontally a lot better than he can vertically. If Diddy is attacked during this move the jetpack will come loose and fly by itself. You can still control the jetpack in the same manner during this time however Diddy will not be able to use recovery moves unless he lands back on stage again.

Some adjustments to this move have been made for Rivals. The max charging time is significantly less to allow for the fact that Rivals relies on a Wall jump system. As a result the jetpack no longer crashes into walls so that you can jump out of it, it will still crash into floors however and Diddy will still take damage doing so.

If Diddy is holding a banana while flying he can drop the banana peel by pressing the attack button, using it to banana bomb the opponents.

Down Special: Banana Peel

Diddy’s main form of stage control, he throws a banana peel out behind him and it lands on the stage. Opponents who come into contact with the banana peel will trip and be stunned for a brief period of time, allowing Diddy to capitalise and punish them, though crouching can prevent the banana from stunning you. Diddy can only have one banana out at a time.

The functionality of the banana has been significantly reworked for Rivals of Aether. Diddy can still pick up the banana like he can in Smash, just press the attack button while Diddy is in the same position as the banana. However, ONLY DIDDY can pick up his banana. Not to worry though as the banana can now be hit around by attacks, taking the knockback of that move. Hitting a banana in this manner will see the attacker gain control of the banana. Diddy cannot pick up his banana unless he owns it.

While Diddy is holding his banana his normal attacks are replaced by throws. Pressing the attack button without holding a direction on the ground will see Diddy throw it forward, as will hoding a direction forward. Holding up while pressing the attack button will see Diddy throw the banana upwards while holding down and attack will see it throw it downwards. Trying to perform Nair while holding the banana will see Diddy perform a Z-drop with the banana peel.

Other things to note:
- Dash Attack now goes off ledge. It acts more like the cartwheel from Donkey Kong Country. The final hit only comes out if the roll connects. You can jump cancel Dash Attack on hit or in the air and doing so will give Diddy an enhanced jump, just like in Donkey Kong Country!
- Ftilt can be angled up and down by holding the direction before it comes out.

Be sure to check out the rest of the Donkey Kong Country 30th Anniversary collection, featuring stages, a skin and a buddy representing different moments throughout Donkey Kong history.

this character is fun and funny. peanut dealing 13% as soon as it's charged to aim straightforward seems a tad overkill tho

beauitfully made. rarely you see characters that represent their main series this well in movements and physics that are also well balanced and animated. i guess the moveset could've been a bit less ported from smash, but honestly it works great so it's barely a complaint

He has a good moveset to be honest it's just the sprites that aren't that great.

The closest you're going to get for now is downloading Maverick and switching him to his second alt.

Yo thanks for the accurate Diddy Kong. Do you have plans to also include DK in that style? The DK that was done is NOT SMASH ACCURATE!!! Can you do the same thing when you can?

Just gone ahead and fixed a bunch of bugs with the banana that were making it very janky. Diddy can't pick it up while rolling anymore and opponents can trade with banana without getting slipped up in the process. I also gave Fair more range, hopefully this improves playing experience.

great character! Funny how Diddy got an actual good character before DK, K. Rool, Dixie, or Cranky
