How to Griffin.
By Penetrator 1
Please base this guide on quality/quantity, not opinion.

A little overview about this guide. I have played Griffin for more then 70 matches and I can say that I am pretty darn good with him.

This guide was intended to help people who play the class "Trapper" with the character "Griffin."

Reminder: This is my first guide ever.

Edit: I have came back and have given my thoughts from the closed beta perspective.

Who is Griffin?
Griffin is a superb Trapper with the ability to Harpoon monsters mid-air/on-ground/etc.. The ability to harpoon a monster just makes his "Dome" stronger. Griffin is the type of character who is a hero and goes in balls deep to help his team win the battle. His kit is not as strong as Maggies since he loses that revive pet but the upside is that he can place sensors to track the monster down. Griffin can place a maximum of 5 sensors throughout the map.

Things to keep in mind with the sensors...
- Press tab to keep them spread.
- ALWAYS BE ALERT.
- Place them in areas without much wildlife, so they don't destroy it.
- A good trick is to plant the sensors on hills, but not too high or the radius of the sensor won't be as optimal as it could be.
Griffin over Maggie? Why?
I prefer Griffin over Maggie because I feel that landing the Harpoons is a game changer. The more domes you land the greater chance you will have against any monster. Don't underestimate the power of the Harpoon as it is a great ability to use. Facing the Kraken can be so much harder when you play Maggie because she has no control over his slows as she would depends heavily on her Medic, Val, to land those important shots. Here's my rotation vs. the Kraken. Get Close > Dome > Harpoon, this must be done VERY QUICKLY or he will just get away. If facing the Goliath the challenge to trap him is much easier because Griffin can easily Harpoon > Dome. When facing the Goliath remember to wait out for his charge/leaps so its easier for you to trap him in.
Facing Wraith with Griffin can be very tough. She is very fast and you will have a hard time harpooning her while in chase - especially if she using her Decoy. But! You can be a game changer if you save your harpoon for the right time : to stop an Abduction or to nulify Supernova's damage by keeping the Wraith out of range. During the cooldowns, bring up that SMG and deal damage.

Now lets go on to Griffin's sensor. Griffin's sensor is fan-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥-tastic. Spread them out as much as possible to reveal and find the monster faster. Placing them in the areas with a lot of wildlife will assure you to spot the monster if he goes there to eat. Placing it in narrow areas is also valuable. Maggie's pet gets far ahead of the group and sometimes slows down. Slowing down is not ideal at all. I guess my view on Sensor v. Pet has changed in the closed beta. Having that one extra revive possibility can be game changing (but is not very reliable). If you like hunting down the monster yourself, go Griffin. If you like being spoonfed, go Maggie. But be aware : a sneaky monster will be very hard to find as Griffin. Try to complete your team with Cabot to dust that monster out !

Griffin's Harpoons > Maggie's Harpoons.
- Perma. CC if the monster is not on you.
- Great peel for your healer/team mates.
- Just a good weapon to have.
- You can stop at every moment an incoming attack.
- You can slow down an escaping monster.

Maggie's harpoons should not be relied on due to the fact that the monster has to get close.
Griffin's Perks.
Griffin is one of the best Hunters in the game. He can harpoon to help his team get to the monster faster and use sensors to track him down quicker. I enjoy playing Griffin. I love the playing the game to the point where I am the reason why my team has won the game. I have found the monster, I have trapped the monster, I have peeled for my team, etc.. Teamwork does matter though.

Question: What perk(s) do you use on Griffin and why?

Answer: On Griffin it is preference. I use something with speed. I love to track that beast down! If it's not speed then it's reload time. Reload that harpoon faster, more cc, more utility.
Griffin's rotations meanwhile in combat.
This is where Griffin can shine. He can dish out A LOT of damage or he can peel the monster from the hunters. Harpooning him a key factor in these team fights. If you are facing a Goliath then deal some damage but at the same time remember to harpoon for the movement impairment. When facing the Kraken you want to ALWAYS keep harpooning him, no matter what the situation may be. Harpooning a kraken can reduce his total damage outcome because your team members can kite the monster more easier.

Goliath
- Switch to Harpoon fast when he's trying to jump on your team mate.
- If on your team mate, slow him down!
- Do damage. It's always good to do damage.

Kraken
- Harpoon constantly. Always get behind him while trying to harpoon though.
- Do damage if needed.

Wraith
- Kill yourself, he 2 shots.
Griffin in Closed Beta
Oh god the Closed Beta.. for those who pre-ordered the game and played against the wraith as griffin.. I feel your tears. The Wraith is just BRUTAL. You're better off playing Abe or Maggie because you have a better possibility of harpooning that damn thing. You try harpooning with Griffin you are sacrificing time/damage/letting your team mates die. It is not worth it to do this.

TL:DR - Wraith > Griffin
Some Gameplay of Griffin.

In my opinon, Griffin is the Hunter that relies most on strategy.Let's say that the Monster scared/attracted some birds.I don't play often with Griffin, but when I do, in such case I surround the area in which the birds were distracted with Sound Spikes. The Monster won't be able to leave without letting me know it.

i do love griffin for the "hunt" and if im trapper its always him, but every time ive late joined a game and im maggie, we win, its simple, follow doge, dome, set traps in spotX leading away from monster, tell team come that way while shooting, and repeat, while her traps range is short, the sheer number she can deploy and i think at a faster rate than griffins aswell, the only think i dislike is that, when i dome a monster, i likse to sound spike the centerish of the dome to help find him if hes hiding or running around in circles somewhere

not sure if this was posted to think of this, but the spikes now actually have a 2nd perimeter inner ring that will detect sneaking monsters, i always try to have the inner ring hitting the map perimeter wall so that they cant sneak past or on maps that are a bit too large for them to be any real use i just make a big line down the middle

@Lame Kid at this stage, barely anyone focuses the traper.

@Silver Quille decoys gonna be nerfed.

I prefer jump height on Griffin, easier to dodge the monster when he is focusing you

@Deathb3rry, Harpoons are not really that effective against Wraith unless you catch her not in her Supernova or her Supernova Arena just ended and she no longer has the flurry of attack speed which will remove harpoons as soon as they skewer her. Not to mention with her Decoy she can break out of the harpoons while the Hunters are busy running from the Decoy to avoid damage.

@Deathb3rry I didn't play against wraith a bunch so I wouldn't really know how to go with or against that. With maggie's pet daisy, yeah, great she tracks. Maggie's traps aren't reliable at all, it's all prediction based. You can't tell me its a form of escape when sometimes it glitches and/or the monster doesn't touch it. You want damage? Go maggie. You want CC? Go griffin. I would rather perma. CC the monster then to damage. My opinion. But yes, you have changed my view, and yes this guide was made in alpha. I am prone to change it in a few here.
Deathb3rry Jan 20, 2015 @ 6:04am
just my 2 cents worth, I disagree with a few of the points you mentioned. Daisy is an excellent tracker, most of the time she will lead you to the monster faster than the other 2 trappers can. The mistake players make is they do not see Maggie's cues and run ahead of it, thereby screwing up its pathing. An often overlooked point on Maggie is that her harpoon traps provide a form of self defense. Griffin's abilities (including harpoon) do not provide an form of escape mechanism, which makes him really fragile. Maggie, on the other hand, can use her traps to escape a monster's pursuit. Against kraken, she may not be as useful as he is constantly airborne, but against goliath, she provides alot of cc. Playing against wraith, if you know how to properly position Griffin's harpoon gun, you can stop a supernova-ed Wraith right in its tracks and save your teammates lives.
