Phasmophobia Halloween 2024 Guide: Blood Moon Event, Moon Totems, and Ghost Behavior
Von Spectral
In this guide, we’ll discuss the Blood Moon event in Phasmophobia, focusing on:

  • Blood Moon Overview: What the Blood Moon is and how it impacts gameplay.
  • Moon Totems: The unique totems found in maps where the Blood Moon is enabled.
  • Ghost Behavior: How the Blood Moon affects the behavior of ghosts, increasing their aggression and altering their patterns.

Note: This guide will be updated continuously as I play through more Blood Moon cases. It will remain a work in progress until the event concludes. Thank you for your understanding!

Introduction
What is Blood Moon?

Blood Moon is a new weather type introduced in the Halloween 2024 event. When active, ghost behavior becomes more aggressive.

While the exact implications are still unclear, we can assume that ghosts will interact and perform events more frequently than usual, potentially draining players' sanity faster. For example, a Poltergeist may create many more Polty Explosions, or a Wraith might spam Airballs more often.

What are Moon Totems?

Moon Totems are objects randomly placed in fixed locations on maps that feature the Blood Moon weather type.

Taking a picture of a Moon Totem will cause it to be destroyed, rewarding you with +1 point per Moon Totem destroyed upon completing the case.

SPECIAL NOTE: "Taking a picture of the Moon Totem when your photo album is full will not destroy it therefore you will not receive 1 Blood Point"

My assumption: Moon Totems are assigned to random locations from a predefined list of valid spots. This conclusion is based on my experience; after about 50 Blood Moon playthroughs, I have yet to encounter a Moon Totem in a different part of the room.

Update: After testing, I can confirm that Moon Totems have never moved after five reloads on each of the four maps (Edgefield, Willow, Point Hope, and Grafton). Once you learn their locations, you’ll know their spawn points.

Why Should You Care About Them?
Completing Blood Moon cases allows you to earn points toward the Halloween 2024 event, which is crucial because there are three stages that reward EVERY PLAYER upon completion:
  1. Stage 1: Blood Moon ID Card
  2. Stage 2: Upgrade ID Card
  3. Stage 3: Blood Moon Trophy & Blood Moon weather post-event
Completing Stage 3 is particularly important. If Blood Moon becomes a permanent feature of the game, every Blood Moon case you complete will grant you an additional 10% to your rewards.

Let’s Do the Math

Professional Mode Earnings: $1,440

With Blood Moon Bonus: $1,440 * 1.10 = $1,584

This may not seem like much initially, but it adds up across many games.

Assuming you complete 100 Blood Moon cases with full rewards:

(Rewards including Blood Moon) - (Normal rewards) = (Difference)

$1,584 - $1,440 = $144

$144 * 100 = $14,400

Still not impressed? Let’s consider the maximum possible earnings of $11,510:

(Rewards including Blood Moon) - (Normal rewards) = (Difference)

$12,661 - $11,510 = $1,151

$1,151 * 100 = $115,100

This way, you can effectively earn the equivalent of a free case’s worth of money. While it may not seem like much, every bit helps you work toward a Tier III Crucifix and your next prestige level.

Blood Moon Maps
The following maps currently feature the Blood Moon weather:
  • 42 Edgefield Road,
  • Grafton Farmhouse,
  • 13 Willow Street,
  • Point Hope

Note: It’s currently unclear whether more maps will be added with Blood Moon weather or if Blood Moon will remain exclusive to these maps after Stage 3 of the event is completed.

Blood Points
You’ll earn Blood Points by completing any of the maps listed above whenever the Blood Moon weather is active. These points contribute to the community rewards for each stage. Once a reward for a stage is unlocked, you’ll be able to claim it. After that, any Blood Points you earn will count toward unlocking the next stage’s reward, progressing like this until the final stage is reached.

Completing a Blood Moon map will award you Blood Points regardless of difficulty. You can even set the multiplier to 0% and enable Friendly Ghost.
  1. 1 Point - Photograph a Moon Totem,
  2. 2 Points - Complete the map,
  3. 10 Points - Identify the ghost
Blood Moons Effect
Will be updated as more information becomes available.

It's been confirmed that
  • ghosts are faster,
  • sanity drains faster,
  • events happen more frequently (beware the Oni).
No other effects have been noted such as hunt thresholds being changed.

  • 2024-10-28: "What I've observed is that ghosts exhibit far more interactions and events than normal when affected by the Blood Moon, compared to their behavior under non-Blood Moon weather."
  • 2024-10-28: "So far, my hypothesis has been confirmed. I have yet to encounter any ghost that doesn't become more aggressive under the effects of a Blood Moon. Even typically passive ghosts like the Goryo and Shade are definitely more aggressive."
  • 2024-10-29: "Many players have noted changes in speed and hunt thresholds, such as ghosts appearing faster than usual or initiating hunts earlier. However, I’ve identified several ghosts, including the Myling, Goryo, Shade, Phantom, Thaye, and Revenant, and have found no notable changes in their behavior."
Rewards
There are three stages, each awarding a unique reward upon completion:
  1. Stage 1: Blood Moon ID Badge
  2. Stage 2: Blood Moon ID Badge (Upgraded)
  3. Stage 3: Halloween 2024 Trophy & Blood Moon Weather Type (Permanently Unlocked)
Once a stage reaches 100% completion, you can claim the reward by interacting with the now glowing Blood Altar in the warehouse, located next to the trophy case.

2024-10-31: It's unknown what the 'upgrade' will do the the Blood Moon ID Badge but I believe it will be animated with a slightly different design.

Blood Moon Trophy / Blood Moon Weather Type: Hover over the black dot

Note: After receiving the Blood Moon Trophy and unlocking Blood Moon weather type. I can't find out how to set it. Will it only be available after the event or will it be randomly assigned to maps?

Quite sad! Would be insanely epic to have such a weather :GhostFlowerHappy:

@Rados No clue. I assumed based on what they said we would have Blood Moon permanently after the event but I've yet to see it or even be able to select it in custom. They probably worded it wrong and made it sound that way.

I'm still confused about Blood Moon weather. I've got the Blood Moon trophy which means I participated and collected rewards from the last stage of the event but I still didn't get a possibility to set up a Blood Moon weather and I've never encountered it after Halloween either.
Any ideas what's the problem can be?

Thank you, i appreciate it (:

Yep go for it  Thanks for asking.
DR. Grordbort 26. Nov. 2024 um 13:55
hey, would it be alright if i used the first image (the one in the "what is blood moon" part at the top) for a bit of college work and only this bit of college work. figured id ask rather than just straight up use it. if not then thats fine.

I added a new totem in a hiding spot so maybe is been spawning there?
AHH_MONSTURR 8. Nov. 2024 um 1:56
Awesome. Every time I'm on point hope the max I get is 2 (if lucky) I have better luck with the farm house :GhostFlowerHappy:

@LunaMill Those max totem spawns are what I've seen so far. So they'll continue changing as I see more spawns. Progress is much faster since the devs lowered the total required points so kudos to them.

After many play throughs, I just got 4 moon totems on Point Hope. Glitch maybe? Nearly caught me by surprise... 1 extra point to the slow growing total lol. (took ss)
