[REUPLOAD] HL:S Fixed Chrome Textures

Description
Contrary to the original author's opinion, this is still needed for much of the workshop's Half-Life: Source content (notably including Captain Charles' Half-Life: Source Playermodels).

Original Addon Link: Currently Not Functional
Original Author: Paynamia

If Paynamia ever reinstates the original addon, or otherwise contacts me requesting its removal, I'll take this upload off the workshop. This is solely for the purposes of archival and compatibility.

I've archived the original description of the mod, alongside all the originally listed pictures, courtesy of the Internet Archive. Despite what the original description states, this has no real compatibility issues.

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION (Circa 2021):

This addon aims to give the best looking chrome textures for HL:S models possible.
All spheremaps used in Half-Life have been converted to cubemaps, and also include HDR versions. This eliminates the issue of tiling spheremaps, and also that of overbright textures on HDR-enabled maps.

Cubemaps, unfortunately, don't work in the same way spheremaps work in GoldSrc or once worked in Source.
Spheremaps in GoldSrc and older versions of Source always orientied themselves based on the player's camera, whereas cubemaps are oriented based on their position in the world. Because of this, there will be some differences when compared to Half-Life.

This addon does not convert chrome textures used on unused models. I may convert these later.

Additionally, cubemaps in the Source Engine aren't affected by lighting, and will appear to glow in the dark. Settings that would allow the textures to be affected by lighting, however, also result in the broken texture mapping and lack of HDR support. There has to be a compromise between these issues.

Help
If the addon or parts of it don't seem to be working, it's likely because of a conflict with another addon. Many Half-Life-related addons include either the original chrome textures or their own attempts at fixing them, and Garry's Mod's load ordering is unpredictable. Addons such as Half-Life: Source Playermodels or Half-Life: Source Sweps are likely to cause this despite otherwise being perfect compliments. For such situations, I'm including a link to a manual download.

i found out about this addon actually being removed because i was lookin through the deleted addons i have, and i still have no idea why did the creator think it wasnt useful anymore, even if it wasnt, it's not an reason to remove the whole addon off the workshop

Oh neat!, this was the chrome textures I used!
They were amazing

Gonna try this, I never really bothered noticing any of the chrome issues, but it's good to have it addressed in my setup so I should test it and see if they look better. Does Voidleak's version of the Half Life 1 SWEPs conflict?
Very stupid, no smarts here Nov 8, 2024 @ 11:27am

Right, but it's still needed until the game itself has a recompiled version of the shader, and I'm not really sure if Facepunch has any interest in that. Paynamia shouldn't have really unlisted this since it's still the best workaround, with at least a few popular addons being developed with it in mind.

Truth be told it technically isnt since the reason it was made was because $envmapsphere wasnt present in gmod until only recently, the problem is that the shader itself is still borked and needs to be recompiled with fixes which is why textures appear pure black or become oddly static.
