Nel 1971 le FS ordinano 20 nuove carrozze destinate a un servizio diverso da quello tradizionale “Ristorante”: si tratta delle carrozze “Self Service”, entrate in servizio nel 1974.
Una parte delle carrozze viene trasformata in carrozze Snack Bar – Ristorante a partire dal 1994/95.

Alcune carrozze Snack Bar – Ristorante vengono impiegate nei servizi notturni internazionali, prima con i treni Artesia e poi con i treni Thello a partire dal 2013.
Nel 2017 i ristoranti dedicati al servizio notturno abbandonano poi la livrea XMPR con fascia grigia, passando a una bianca con fasce nei colori Thello di prima e seconda classe.

Nel 2023, dopo la fine dei treni Thello, entrano a far parte della flotta della nuova società Treni Turistici Italiani, indossandone la livrea blu con strisce rosse.

Le restanti carrozze non seguono la sorte delle altre, rimanendo “Self Service”. Infatti, iniziarono a essere trasformate in BHR come parte del Progetto IC 901, che seguirono con alterne fortune. Le prime carrozze trasformate ricevettero direttamente la livrea EuroStar City Italia (ESCI), passando poi a quella Frecciabianca. Nel 2014, alcune furono vestite con la livrea diurna Thello per i servizi MiNiMa. A partire dal 2024, tutte le carrozze BHR precedentemente "Self Service" riceveranno la nuova livrea interCity al posto di quella vecchia.

In 1971, FS ordered 20 new carriages designed for a service other than the traditional “Restaurant” one: these are the “Self Service” carriages, which entered service in 1974.
A portion of the carriages were transformed into Snack Bar – Restaurant carriages starting in 1994/95.

Some Snack Bar – Restaurant carriages were used on international night services, first with Artesia trains and then with Thello trains starting in 2013.
In 2017, the restaurants dedicated to the night service then abandoned the XMPR livery with a gray band, switching to a white with bands in the Thello colors of first and second class.

In 2023, after the end of the Thello trains, they entered the fleet of the new Treni Turistici Italiani company, wearing its blue livery with red stripes.

The remaining carriages did not follow the fate of the others, remaining “Self Service”.
In fact, they were started to be transformed into BHR as part of the IC 901 Project, which they followed with varying fortunes. The first transformed carriages directly received the EuroStar City Italia (ESCI) livery, then switching to the Frecciabianca one. In 2014, some were dressed in the daytime Thello livery for the MiNiMa services.
Starting from 2024, all the BHR carriages formerly “Self Service” are receiving the new interCity livery in place of the old one.
