Better Shields

Description
Personally, I like my shields offering real protection when playing with a mechanic like Lethality.

This small mod changes the game's shield stats to offer a higher chance to block an incoming missile from the front. Chances have been increased by a flat 15-20%, meaning even low-tier militia has about 50% chance to block an incoming missile, while elite units can go up to 90-95%. This applies only for missiles coming from the front when the unit has its shields raised, attacks from the back or rear still deal full damage as per usual.

No other table has been touched. This mod should be compatible with anything. Even if another mod touches the same stats, at worst it will just overwrite my changes (if it's higher in the load order than me).

This mod applies both to the player and the AI.

This mod is great. Now my shield men can actually take arrow volleys with some decent success, like wise for the AI. Vanilla shields were just paperweights.

deberian hacer que sea distinto el nivel de escudo cuando estan defrente, a cuando estan defrente pero peleando

Great mod btw. Just got the game, I always hated how archers could mow down my legionnaires in rome 2, from the front when they have tower shields and had developed specific formations/gear for that purpose irl

@KilWonder skill issue tbh. It fits the theme though, armies heavily relied on archers in the bronze age. They didn't have nice steel blades and armor. Egypt and most of Africa used archers heavily even in Antiquity, during the Roman times. Not only is it cheap and effective, but using heavy infantry in the desert is not ideal. With archers they can skirmish, wearing the enemy down under the intense heat, wishing a volley would come just to block the sun for a second

@Horned_Man:
Your mod is fine, if Octavius wants it so badly it would be better, him, making his own mod...

Fantastic Mod, exactly what I was looking for to address the missile unit issue, a way to enjoy Lethality in a more realistic sense, i.e Shields from the front should block most of the time but still allows rear and flanks to be weaker spots as unguarded by the shield.

Even with this mod the archers mow down every units they aim at.

I already did that to an extent, but my goal isn't to normalise all shield values to be roughly the same, by buffing the bad ones more. Elite units should still be considerably better at blocking incoming shots.

Still, shields that only blocked ~35% of incoming missiles have been buffed the most (+20%). Shields that blocked >75% of incoming missiles have had a reduced buff (+10/15%). This makes the most elite of units go up to 95% block chance from the front, but never 100%. As you mentioned, you can only reach 100% while in a stance.

A flat increase disproportionately benefits the big-shield units. Rather than looking at the block chance, one should look at the hit chance:

A unit with 75% block chance has a 25% chance to be hit. A flat 15% increase to block chance reduces that 25% hit chance to 10%, which is a 60% reduction (100-(10/25*100)).

A unit with 55% block chance has a 45% chance to be hit. A flat 15% increase to block chance reduces that 45% hit chance to 30%, which is a 33.3% reduction, considerably less than 60%.

If you're still not convinced, consider that a unit that'd go from 85% block chance to 100% chance could tank an infinite amount of arrows.

My suggestion/request would be to make a version that gives for example a 20% bonus to the smallest shield and a mere 5% to the biggest ones. Also because the big shielded units tend to have stances that increase their block chance by an additional 10%.

It's compatible. It only edits the shield table, so any new unit will also get this mod's bonuses.
