Puffing Billy 1813 | Early Steam Locomotive

Puffing Billy is the world's oldest surviving steam locomotive, constructed in 1813–1814 by colliery viewer William Hedley, enginewright Jonathan Forster and blacksmith Timothy Hackworth for Christopher Blackett, the owner of Wylam Colliery near Newcastle upon Tyne, in the United Kingdom. It was employed to haul coal chaldron wagons from the mine at Wylam to the docks at Lemington in Northumberland.

Puffing Billy remained in service until 1862, when Edward Blackett, the owner of Wylam Colliery, lent it to the Patent Office Museum in South Kensington, London (later the Science Museum). He later sold it to the museum for £200. It is still on display there. Its sister locomotive, Wylam Dilly, is preserved in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Two replicas exist: one, built in a Royal Bavarian State Railways workshop in 1906, is at the German Museum, Munich; the other, at Beamish Museum, was first run in 2006.

Note: Due a needed heavy use of invisible parts, the actual size, mainly width, is significantly greater than the listed numbers. This won't be a problem in default worlds, but may be an issue with custom structures. Check what it looks like in F2 mode to see what you can fit through.

Although primarily designed to be operated with two people since the driver was on one end and the fireman on the other end, I put a hidden secondary control panel in place on the fireman's side for single-player operation. Just go to the main controls, flip the little switch directly underneath labeled "Enable Fireman's Controls", and the control panel will flip open.


-Unsurprisingly, the locomotive isn't particularly strong. I was only able to fit in 2 small pistons driving only a single set of wheels, so the pulling capacity can be, well... laughable.

-This recreation is NOT at 1:1 scale. It's extremely difficult, if not impossible, to build something like this at an actual 1:1 scale and have it function at all. This is just a loose, somewhat disproportionate recreation.

-I have absolutely no clue which way is forwards. I would have assumed the loco would be positioned engine-first, but all videos I've seen of the replica being operated have it tender-first, so that's how I put it.
