JR Central 311 Series / JR東海311系

The 311 Series (311系) is an suburban type EMU operated by JR Central since 1989.

Developed for the new special rapid service introduced after privatization, the 311 Series was the first EMU designed by JR Central. It was based on the 211-5000 series, which was in production at the time. All seats installed in this type are convertible cross seats, which were suitable for longer distance commuters. Organized into 4 car formations, 15 sets were produced, for a total of 60 cars. In 2005 all cars underwent accessibility modification with wheelchair spaces installed. Further renewal works saw the pantograph replaced with a single arm type on all sets by 2008. Since 1999 the 313 series had taken over most special rapid operations, and the 311 series delegated to local trains in the Nagoya area. The type also sees some service in the Shizouka area as of current. JR Central's newest commuters trains the 315 series have been replacing all types older than the 313 series since 2022, 8 sets have already been retired, leaving 28 cars remaining in service. They are scheduled to be fully phased out by 2026.
