Boosting Your FPS in CS2: A Step-by-Step Guide

In this tutorial, I'll walk you through the process of increasing your FPS by 50-60 in CS2 without the need for any additional software.

Launch Options

Launch Options ⚙️

1. Right-click on Counter-Strike 2 in your Steam game library within the main Steam window.
2. From the dropdown menu, select "Properties."
3. This action will open a new window. Within this window, locate and click on the "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS" button.
4. Another window will appear, allowing you to input various launch options. Each new launch option should begin with a dash or a plus sign. Do not separate the launch options with commas or semicolons; simply leave a space between each option.
5. Once you've added your desired launch options, click "OK" and then close the window.



Launch Options:

-novid: Disables the game's introductory screen saver.

-high: Launches the game with a high priority, optimizing performance.

-threads <number of cores/threads>: Specifies the number of processor cores/threads that the game can utilize.

-nod3d9ex: Reduces memory consumption and enhances window-switching speed (useful for alt+tab).

-noaafonts: Removes font smoothing for improved performance.

-nojoy: Disables gamepad/joystick support.


By following these steps and implementing the recommended launch options, you can significantly enhance your FPS in CS2 without the need for any additional software.

Impact of New Anti-Aliasing on FPS in CS 2

Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) now features a new type of anti-aliasing. Instead of using FXAA, Valve has introduced CMAA2. Let's break down the differences between them in a simple way. FXAA, or Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing, quickly smooths out jagged edges on your screen but can blur the overall image. CMAA2 also performs fast anti-aliasing but does so more intelligently, preserving image clarity and details.

This essentially means that CMAA2 can be activated with minimal performance impact, maintaining your FPS while providing a cleaner, smoother image with fewer jagged edges compared to no anti-aliasing. It's a good alternative to MSAA if you're looking to boost your FPS in CS2, as enabling MSAA will generally reduce your frames per second.

Shadows, Textures, and Ambient Occlusion in CS2

CS2 features around ten graphic settings that influence FPS and performance, which can be categorized into two groups. First, we will discuss the settings that have the most significant impact on FPS. Then, we will cover other parameters that can also help increase FPS, albeit to a lesser extent.

The three settings with the greatest effect on FPS in CS2 are:

- Shadow Quality
- Texture Quality
- Ambient Occlusion

Lowering the Shadow Quality to Low can increase FPS by 8-9% compared to the maximum setting. Enabling Ambient Occlusion can decrease FPS by up to 6%. Setting Textures above Medium can result in an FPS loss of approximately 5%. In total, these three settings combined can reduce your FPS by 15-20%.

Shaders, Particles, and High Dynamic Range

Now let's discuss the settings that have minimal impact on CS2 performance: Shaders, Particles, and High Dynamic Range. Each of these settings can cause only a 1-2% reduction in FPS. Lower these settings only if you need to squeeze out a few extra frames per second; otherwise, they can be left as is.

What's truly important are your CS2 skins. They will still look great regardless of your video settings.

What is AMD FidelityFX?

What is AMD FidelityFX in CS2 and How Does It Increase FPS?

AMD FidelityFX is a new video setting in CS2 designed to enhance performance.
In simple terms, AMD FidelityFX is intelligent image upscaling software.
Here's how it works: the game renders each frame at a lower resolution, and then AMD’s advanced software technology processes and enhances this frame to appear as if it were rendered at a higher resolution.
Essentially, it re-renders each frame to improve its quality.



How does this impact CS2?

By enabling this setting, you can increase your FPS without significantly sacrificing image quality, similar to lowering your screen resolution.
This provides a balanced solution for maintaining performance while enjoying high-quality textures in CS2, making it particularly beneficial for older PCs.

NVIDIA Reflex

Currently, NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency is not functioning properly. Many players report slow performance and even lags when using it. Until Valve addresses this issue, we recommend turning off NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency.



At the bottom of the Options menu, you'll find NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency. According to NVIDIA, this technology is designed to reduce input lag, not to be confused with ping or internet connection issues. It specifically targets and reduces system delays.

To explain further, consider mouse movements. Even modern gaming mice don't respond instantly when you press a button. There's a slight delay as the click is processed, sent to your computer, and then processed again before being sent to the server. This delay is usually measured in milliseconds. NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency technology aims to minimize this delay, providing a more responsive gaming experience.

Great news! NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency does not impact CS2 performance or FPS, according to the developers. The only drawback is that it can only be enabled on GTX 900 series or newer GPUs. If you have a compatible GPU, you can enable this option without any concerns.

Graphics Settings: New Shadows, Particles, HDR

CS2 has introduced enhanced shadows that look better overall and include your own character's shadow. However, for higher FPS, it's recommended to set Shadows to MIN. You'll still see all essential shadows, and even at the minimum setting, they look slightly better than in CS:GO.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is another setting that affects image contrast, including objects in shadows. The good news is that HDR does not significantly impact FPS.
If your system can handle it or you prefer enhanced visuals, feel free to enable it.

Lastly, Particle Detail controls the appearance of dust, smoke, and other small particles.
CS2 allows you to see changes instantly in the settings menu, so you can adjust and observe how reducing particle quality decreases smoke density, like from a burning barrel in the background. While we haven't found any areas, such as on Dust 2, where particle density significantly impacts gameplay, lowering this setting to MIN can help increase FPS without noticeable visual drawbacks.

Best Optimized Settings

For maximum frames per second in CS2, use the following optimized settings:


- Monitor Resolution: Default. If necessary, reduce to 1280×960

- Boost Player Contrast: Enable. It won't affect performance and helps with gameplay

- Multisampling Anti-Aliasing Mode: CMAA2. If you have a good PC, use MSAAx4

- Shadow Quality: Low

- Texture Quality: Medium

- Shaders: Low

- Particle Effects: Low

- Ambient Occlusion: Low

- High Dynamic Range: Quality

- FidelityFX: Quality

- Nvidia Reflex Low Latency: Disabled
