JR West 271 Series / JR西日本271系

The 271 Series (271系) is a Limited Express type EMU operated by JR West on airport express Haruka.

Produced as 3 car additional consists to increase capacity of Haruka services, the 271 series follows the high cab design of the compnay's 287 series. Limited Express runs to Kansai Airport have been operated by the 281 series since 1994, but as demand rose in the 21st century, the 6 car formations were starting to become insufficient. While the 281 series had some additional consists, there were not enough vehicles to operate all services as 9 car trains. Entering service in 2020, the 271 series adopted the 0.5M design, with all cars installed with 2 motors. Compatibility with the under construction Naniwasuji Line which would connect JR Namba with the Osaka-Umeda station complex were considered, as JR West intends to shift Haruka services onto the new line upon completion. As the COVID pandemic drastically reduced international travel, production of the 271 series was suspended after just 18 cars. There were plans for a 6 car basic formation to be produced to replace the 281 series, but none currently exist. While all sets have returned to active use by 2023, no new vehicles have been manufactured since 2020. JR West has not publicly stated whether production would be restarted.
