But the Order is not quite the shortest route.

If memory serves, you have to be within 50m to see the gold shimmer so you're correct. You could walk by a key if you're looking the wrong way.
The limited view distance in game makes it harder as it should be.
I shows trees miles away but the warden altar you have to get quite close ^^
