Intro

EWAC is an acronym that describes several criteria used for an ambush; but more specifically for the Security Element of an ambush

Security Element criteria is especially critical because:
- Security Elements are often less in number. equipment and supervision
- If compromised, may expose the upcoming ambush or be destroyed by the ENY

EWAC
- Engagement Criteria
- Withdrawal Criteria
- Abort Criteria
- Compromise Criteria

An Ambush has 3 parts:
- Assault Element
- Support Element
- Security Element

Forms of an Ambush:
- Point Ambush
- Area Ambush
- Anti-armor Ambush

An Ambush timeline can be:
- Hasty (chance contact)
- Deliberate (pre-planned)

An Ambush formation can be:
- Linear
- 'L' shaped
- Several other options

Engagement
'Engagement' criteria are those that the OIC (Officer In Charge) will give the unit during an ambush

Engagement criteria are often slightly different for the different parts of an ambush
- ASSLT/SBF/SEC

Elements of an Engagement criteria for Security are:

Rules of engagement (ROE)
  • who can be engaged (ENY in uniform/CIV with weapons etc.)
  • when to engage ENY forces
    • BEFORE and/or AFTER Ambush
  • Ambush will initiate with 15 PAXs or less (Personnel); 3 or less light skinned vehicles: 2 or less armoured vehicles

Actions on ENY engaged contact
  • Block-off ENY reinforcements
  • Prepare site with Claymore mines (1 dual rigged for command detonation/90 second fuse)
  • Emplace AP/AT (Anti-Personnel/Tank) mines
  • Prepare AT rockets
Withrawal
Withdrawal criteria is used to decide when/why a part of the Ambush should leave their position(s)

3 common Withdrawal criteria are based on:
- Events
- Time
- Threat

For the Security Element:
Events- the Ambush is over and the OIC contacts the SEC via radio/signal/ENY equipment demo etc.

Time - Withdraw to RP (Release Point) and to the ORP (Objective Rally Point) NLT (No Later Than) 30 mikes after ambush is initiated

Threat - if the ENY forces are overwhelming the SEC, activate a flare and set 1 Claymore mine once you break contact; and set another Claymore mine on a 90 second fuse delay

Abort

Security Element will Abort if:
  • ENY flanks/attack with overwhelming force
  • OIC cancels Ambush (via radio/messenger/visual etc.) signal
  • ENY QRF breaches Security position
  • NLT 30 mikes after Ambush is initiated or a specific time hack (2400hrsZ)
Compromise
2 types of Compromise exist:
  • Soft - the Ambush is not compromised and can continue
  • Hard - the Ambush is not longer possible

Soft compromise - restrain and CM (Continue Mission)

Hard compromise
  • Activate 1 Claymore mine; activate 90 second fuse on second Claymore
  • Activate flare and smoke grenades
  • Execute buddy-team bounds back to the RP/ORP
Conclusion
When in doubt...blow your rocket and Bug Out!

If you enjoy 'copy & paste' then consider reading the guide entitled: "Murphy's Laws of Combat"...and pay particular attention to: "Rule #32 - Professionals Soldiers are predictable, but the world is full of amateurs". An institutional knowledge anchored in doctrine, coupled with experience, is what will raise your proficiency to the next level...and allows the end user the ability to mitigate the spectrum of opposing ENY capabilities.

it's great that you can copy and paste from the military manuals, but how well does this actually translate into Arma? keep in mind that mission makers, more often than not, don't design their missions with these tactics in mind. nor does Arma AI follow typical human behavior. strict adherence to real-world doctrine is more likely to get players killed than lead to victory.
