The 126th Infantry Regiment is a National Guard regiment comprised mostly of National Guard Soldiers from the West Michigan area. The Regiment has lineage dating back to before the American Civil War. Prior to the First World War the Regiment was Grouped with some other Regiments from Wisconsin to make the 32nd Infantry Division. During World War One the Division would earn the nickname The” Red Arrow” division after successfully penetrating the Hindenburg line.
Prior to the U.S. entering the Second World War the 32nd Division would be activated again where it would take part in the Louisiana Training Maneuvers in preparation for a potential deployment to Europe. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harber the Division would be sent to the Pacific Theater. Arriving in Australia in May 1942 then in September 1942 the Division would arrive at Port Morsby, New Guinea.

In October 2nd Battalion 126th Infantry Regiment was sent down the Kapa-Kapa Track across the Owen-Stanley Mountain Range. This treck would last 42 days and would cost the battalion many casualties from many different Jungle illnesses. This is where the name "Ghost Mountain Boys" would come from.

After arriving at their destination and getting only 10 days to recover the 126th would be put into action on 15 November 1942. The regiment would see almost continuous combat until 22 January 1943 when it was relieved after the bloody battle of Buna-Gona. It had 131 officers and 3,040 enlisted men when it entered combat. After the battle the unit had been decimated by disease as well as battle. Only 32 officers and 579 enlisted men were left.
