small oil rig for dummies

A beginner's guide to doing the small oil rig (smoil) in rust, this will cover all the good ways of taking, and holding it down from other players. If you are just starting out in rust, or even if you are a highly experienced player in the game, this guide is certainly worth the read.

Getting the sufficent keycards

Depending what server you are playing on, getting key-cards can be either challenging or simple. So, lets cover some of the ways of getting them and what key-cards you actually need.

The blue keycard will be required to access the blue-room in small oil rig, the blue-room contains a locked door with the locked crate inside. This door can be unlocked with the red key-card.

The Blue Key-card: The blue key-card can be found in the following monuments:

Small Harbor Monument
Large Harbor Monument
Satellite Dish Monument
Sewer Branch Monument
Outpost (not a monument, but it can still be found here by paying 100 scrap)

to get the blue key-card, you need to complete the puzzle corresponding to the following monuments mentioned about a second ago. (Unless you are buying one at outpost, if you are, find the vending machine containing the blue key-card, and buy it for 100 scrap)

The Red Key-card: The red key-card can be found in the following monuments:

Water Treatment Plant Monument
Airfield Monument
Power Plant Monument
Train Yard Monument
The Missile Silo Monument (quite a difficult monument)

to get the red key-card, you need to complete the puzzle corresponding to the following monuments, just like last time. Now, you should have the blue and red key-card!

What gear should you bring?

I would personally recommend bringing a Tier one, or Tier two gun like, but not limited to
(and not containing tier 3 gear) :

The semi automatic pistol,
The semi automatic rifle,
The Thompson,
The M92 Pistol,
The revolver

though, this monument is definitely do-able with primitive gear, like a bow, crossbow, compound bow, etc.. It will just be way more difficult.

For clothing, id recommend, but not limited to (and not containing tier 3 gear):

A hazmat suit,
Full hide kit with a bandanna, wolf headdress,
Full Road Sign kit (Tier two kit, quite hard to acquire if you are new),

With the kits provided here, or even other protection, you should generally be fine.

Getting to the small oil rig

Boat Approach:

RHIB (Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat [Cost: 300 scrap]): Faster and can carry more players or loot, though it burns a lot of low grade fuel.

Motor Rowboat [Cost: 125 scrap]: A bit slower than the RHIB, can carry a few players, with a smaller loot box, it burns less fuel than the RHIB.

Kayak [Cost: its craft-able, look it up online]: Requires a paddle, pretty cool way to get to the small oil rig, though, not too efficient.

Aerial Approach:

Mini Copter [Cost: 750 scrap]: Two seater, high fuel consuming helicopter. [100% Recommended to go via minicopter]

Scrap Helicopter [Cost: 1250 scrap]: A durable, big helicopter, can fit about 6 - 8 people inside of it, i would recommend taking this if you are in a group greater than 2 members.

Attack-Helicopter [Cost: 2250 scrap]: A helicopter that can hold rockets, a single rifle or smg, and ammo. Useful if you wanna blow people up on the oil rig (though, its really not that great)

So yeah, you can also swim to the oil rig, you can also take diving gear with you which makes it a lot more do-able.

Killing the Blue Scientists, Unlocking the blue & red room, and killing the Heavy Scientists.

Helicopter approach:

Helipad landing:

As you approach the oil rig, get ready to land on the helipad located on the rig, once landed, stand at the sides of the helipad, shooting the scientists. Some might push the helipad, but its ok!! just get your gun and shoot them, it's not too hard. You wont have to kill many blue scientists.

After killing all of the scientists, make sure to not leave your minicopter on the helipad, as when you call the heavy scientists their helicopter will land on yours, destroying it. Land it like so:


Opening the blue-card room:


Opening the blue card room is simple. Just swipe your Blue key-card on the blue door, there might be one or two scientists inside, so just stand back and kill them. Once in the room, open the green military crate, and the forest-camo like elite crate. After doing so, just prepare then open the red door.

Opening the red key-card room:


Opening this room is more simple than wiping your ass. Just swipe the red key-card and you now have access to the crate. Press E on the crate when ready, this will call in the heavy scientists. Once pressed, race to the crane which looks like this:


Now, you can just sit behind the crane and kill the heavy scientists safely.

Defending against counters:

Defending against counters can be challenging, but there are some effective ways of dealing with them, i would recommend just sitting on the helipad, so people cannot dive bomb the helipad without getting shot by you. Another way people will counter is via boat. You will know when someone is coming via boat because the scientist at the very bottom of the rig will shoot at anybody that comes close, if you are defending against players that are on a boat, use this peek below:


these are the stairs that anyone coming via boat or swimming, will have to climb up. This is a really good peak and i recommend just holding it if anyone comes via boat.
