E3 Series Shinkansen / 新幹線E3系

The E3 Series (E3系) is a Shinkansen train type operated by JR East on the Tōhoku Shinkansen and Yamagata Shinkansen.

Developed as the inaugural type for the opening of the Akita Shinkansen in 1997, the E3 series is a mini-shinkansen vehicle, which has a narrower body and shorter cars allowing it operate on re-gauged conventional lines. Initially operating as 5-car Komachi services, lengthening to 6 cars was commenced one year after operations begun. A modified 7-car -1000 variant was produced as additional sets for the Yamagata Shinkansen Tsubasa when the Shinjō extension opened in 1999, while the -2000 sets were produced from 2007-2010 to replace older 400 series sets on the aforementioned line. 261 total cars were produced from the three variants. From 2013-2014 the original -0 series would be retired in favor of the new E6 series on the Akita Shinkansen. While on the Yamagata Shinkansen, the new E8 series have been gradually replacing the existing fleet since March 2024, with all E3-1000 series sets having been withdrawn. JR East plans for all Tsubasa services to be operated with E8 series trains by FY2026.
