This URL installs the following:
- The Ur-Quan Masters HD MegaMod (*)
A few notable examples of what's inside it,
is the remastered soundtrack, 3DO videos,
new game mode, expanded options menu.

(*): It remains as faithful to the source material as possible, while
offering modern textures, new settings, cheats, fixes, etc.; MM is a
compilation of HD-mod, HD-Remix, Nic's Extended mod and a few
other extras that can be either selected or deselected before install.

Installation

1. Go to the website linked above.
2. Click on the "Sourceforge" button, colored in red.
4. Press the green button on Sourceforge and save the .exe to your computer.
5. Launch the executable. Press Next, then Install.

──────────────────

Now pay attention: take a moment to carefully select from the dropdown
menu all the revisions you'd like to incorporate to your personalized mod.
In my opinion, you should select Custom, scroll down, then do as follows:

( X ) UQM
( X ) Executable
( X ) Core Data
( X ) Desktop Icon

( ? ) HD Data
  • Your choice. If you're a veteran or a particularly picky player, you may want to select this and experience the revamped quality of the graphics. If you're nostalgic or a conoisseur, don't.

( X ) 3DO Content
( X ) Music
( X ) Voiceovers
( X ) Videos
  • The vast majority of the fanbase agrees on the fact that the 3DO version had better soundtrack compared to the MS-DOS one, and I would add it's one of the best in the industry, period. Regarding voiceovers, these are very recommended because they give a lot of personality to the various races; otherwise, you will have to read text upon text with the monotone of your mind... Videos are, instead, a bit more personal. I like FMVs because they grant me with a wind of nostalgia, but unfortunately, they aren't subtitled. In parallel, by deselecting this option, you'll have artworks instead of cutscenes, with captions you'll have to read. Both are good for different reasons, and both have their drawbacks.

( ) Volasaurus' Complete Remix
( ) Volasaurus' Space Music
  • I encourage you not to touch the music for your first playthrough.

( ) Lance_Vader's Utwig voicepack
  • A surprising amount of people despise the fatalist voiceover of the Utwig, so a certain user redid it completely. Personally, I want to keep these things as vanilla as possible, and I don't mind the original voice.

( ? ) Soul Reaver's Fixes/Voices
( ? ) Melnorme Fix/Revoice
( ? ) Syreen Fix/Revoice
  • Double-edged sword. The fixed text of these species is worth it, yet the revoice is a pretty steep price to pay if we take into consideration the logic mentioned earlier. However, the author of this mod chimed in, and had this to say: "I'd like to point out that the 'Soul Reaver Fixes' re-adds dialogue that was in the original PC version of this game, some of which provides information that is crucial if you want to be able to finish this game without a guide. If you're planning on playing this voiced and want to play without needing a guide/without relying on random exploration, then I strongly recommend installing those fixes. Yes, two characters are re-voiced (since it was impossible to recreate the originals for a free mod), but I don't think the new voices sound bad. Full disclosure though: I made those mods, so of course I'd be biased toward them."

( ) Precursors Remixes
  • Same as Volasaurus. Don't do it for now.

Now you have a new UrQuanMasters.exe with a Custom version of the HD MegaMod. Note that you'll have to start the game from there if you want to experience all the changes. You can easily link a new game through Steam and launch it from there, but since it's unpublished files we're talking about, the play hours won't be counted.

To circumvent this, you may edit the launch options from the game's properties on your Steam library, then specify the new executable. Or, you may delete the original .exe and replace it with the new one (rename the latter so it shares the same name).

RoboticREX wrote a guide about this topic, though. If nothing else works, try their method: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3408313437

Special thanks to the creators of this beloved title for making it available on Steam (we finally have the better version!) Another shoutout goes, of course, to the modders who made such projects possible. This guide may get updates and fixes in the future, so put it in your favorites! Also, if you're so kind, you can rate the article so more people can discover it. Steam Awards are encouraged as well, since they help me gauge the userbase's interest, but they're not mandatory.

With that being said, thank you for stepping by! It was a pleasure to assist you.

I'm also interested in knowing if there's a Mac version of this setup...

Is there a way to get this for Mac?

There's an Android port of Commander Genius too which uses the same frontend. On-screen touchpad controls. Games downloadable from within the app (with Keen1, Keen4, Keen7, and several others being freeware and downloadable from the app).

Anyways, just wanted to share this info. And say thank you for putting this guide together! I didn't know about some of the extras listed here. 2/2

Thanks for posting this! I found out about Star Control II / The Ur-Quan Masters... many years ago now when Ur-Quan Masters HD was on Google Play Store on Android. The APK file is still available online to install the game to Android devices! I haven't tested it in a while, so I'm unsure if it still works on newer versions of AndroidOS (last time I tried was with Android 5.0 ICS I think?? Though it may have been with Android 10.), but when I did try it it still worked as expected and I was still able to download all the required UQM files from within the app allowing it to run properly.

A great and unexpected experience, especially for a mobile game! Though, when it was still on Google Play Store, it was before the terrible revamp they did which ended up delisting all sorts of games that were actually, well... GAMES. 1/2

There are some tricks you can use to get the megamod to launch with steam release's play button.

You can backup and move the steam install, and copy the contents of the megamod into the now empty steam folder.

Rename UrQuanMasters.exe to uqm.exe.

launch options: -n content_mm -C config_mm
and rename Megamod's content folder to content_mm to add a little bit of resistance to an untimely update overwriting everything.

If you play on linux/steam deck with proton its even easier and even more update proof! Install the windows version somewhere using wine, then select a proton version and in launch options set something like: $(echo %command% | sed -r "s/proton waitforexitandrun .*/proton waitforexitandrun/") "[HD Megamod Directory]/UrQuanMasters" -n "[HD Megamod Directory]/content" -C "[HD Megamod Directory]/config"

[HD Megamod Directory] should be replaced with the directory where you installed the megamod.

You should have you playtime counted on Steam, and access to the overlay.

Passing off subjectivity as something objective, is still subjectivity... And a sign of immaturity.

No, vanilla was flawed. Everything has flaws.

I personally wouldn't do it for the first playthrough, because the audio is a fundamental part of the game that should be experienced as vanilla as possible, at least for a newcomer. If that's better or worse than the remixes, that's entirely subjective and it's beside the point.

Disagree, do it. Most of the Precursors Remixes are better than their originals. Most are also remixed by the authors of the originals. 🎶
