Ultimate Portal Deathmatch Tutorial

In this tutorial, I will show you how to play a deathmatch map with some advice.

The Basics

Let's start with the basics first.

When you spawn, you will be outside of the arena. To get inside the arena, you will need to walk on the jump pad, to get launched inside the arena.

Once you get inside the arena, you will notice many fizzlers on the location of where you landed. This is called the safe zone. It is to protect you from getting spawn killed instantly when you enter the arena. It is also used to protect other players outside the safe zone against the people that already are inside of it. Be aware, the fizzlers will remove your placed portals if you get in contact with these, while fighting your foe.

To defeat your foe, you need to do these 3 steps:
1. Place your secondary portal up on the ceiling on the white surface.
   
2. Aim at your foe's feet and try to shot the primary portals under.
   
3. If they are too fast, try to place your primary portal infront of your foe to the direction they are moving to.

Most of the arena is covered with orange gel to let the players be able to move faster.

Useful Tools

Here are some useful tools.

Note: You will need to know how to open up the developer console!

+remote_view

This allows you to see your foe's screen the entire team without needing to hold down the key. It is really useful for knowing what move he is about to do. Of course, you have to pay more antention to what you do. To disable it, just replace the "+" with a "-" one.

bind "TAB" "+score"

This is my favourite one. This command will open up a scoreboard, when you hold down the "TAB" key. It allows you to see your names, deaths, scores and ping. It is useful to see who has died the most. Unfortunatly, you do not earn score for destroying your foe, but for each time you die, your score will decrease. The scoreboard does mentioned how many deaths Atlas and P-body have gotten. This scoreboard will make it easier to know, who is the winner and who is the loser.

bind "mouse3" "+zoom"

You can also replace the "mouse3" with a "r" if you don't have it on your mouse. Once you press the key to zoom, you have a better advantage of taking down your foe with some aiming skills. You can also use this to zoom out, rather than having the zoom in and zoom out seperated.

Awesome Tricks

Here are some tricks you might wanna learn to get a bigger chance of winning.

Portal Thief: Stealing your foe's portal placed location on the ceiling. This will replace your enemy's portal with yours on that location, so the foe will not be able to take you down until he made a new portal on the ceiling. This might take a while for your foe to discover or not, depending on how good the player is.

Slide Jump: Fast running speed + run into the fizzlers with a good amount of speed = Win! This trick requires some skills to do. You do not need to jump in order to do this. There are 2 ways this trick could go wrong. Your speed might be too slow to launch you high enough up in the air, or it could send you flying out of the arena. The good side of doing this trick is that you will get a better chance of actually getting your foe through your portal, when you are in mid-air. You barely have time to do it, but once you are looking from above, this will increase your chance to caught your opponent. If you enable blue gel on the arena, do not try to run fast on the blue gel. If you do, you will most likely fly off the arena and die.
