How to migrate your Xbox Gamepass save to Steam

If you're like myself and enjoy playing this game on Gamepass but want to switch to Steam, I'd like to share how I migrated the save from Gamepass to Steam.

Step by Step

Hello everyone! If you're like myself and enjoy playing this game on Gamepass but want to switch to Steam, I'd like to share how I migrated the save from Gamepass to Steam.

1. You need a tool to extract the save on Gamepass because Gamepass use a Cloud save, so you won't find the save on your local machine. You can download it from here https://github.com/Z1ni/XGP-save-extractor/releases. Credit for the tool @Z1ni [github.com]
   Download the file name xgp-save-extractor.exe and make sure you get the latest version and put the file anywhere that you want.
   
2. Just open the file that you just downloaded. Windows will ask if you want to open that file just click "More Info > Run anyway"
   
   
   
3. You should get a zip file palworld_xboxusername_timestamp.zip. Open that zip file and you'll see your save data. (I have 2 worlds)
   
   
4. Go to "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Pal\Saved\SaveGames" and you should see a random number folder and Useroption.sav. Go into that random number folder. If you can't find this folder, make sure you run the game on Steam, create at least one world, and walk around for a few minutes.
   
5. Paste your save folder here.
   
   
   
6. That's it. You just migrate the save to Steam. Enjoy the game with your pals on Steam! 😁
   

Update 22/01/24: Tool just updated to use the correct directory, so it's much easier now to migrate your save files.

FAQ

Q: If I played with my friends, only the host character was transferred. Can I transfer my friend characters as well?
A: Yes, you can. But it's a little complicated because you need to edit your friends' save files and change from Gamepass id to Steam id. You can follow the guide here Credit @robotec007

Q:Can I change my player's name?
A: Afaik, you can't change the character name once you've created.

@ben The tool is open-source, so you can check the code on Github. The .exe file is basically a compiled version of a Python script.

Is there any way to transfer a friend's character from Game Pass? Because when you log in to Steam it offers to create a new character.

@nosekefik, as far as I know, you can't change your character name after you have created a character.
