Yono

Description
Yono, The Carrier’s Honour arrives in RIVALS OF AETHER!

The estranged son of a Captain of the elusive Postmen's Guild, an elite league of postal officers located in the heart of the Air Capital, Yono is one reliable deliverer!

While born and raised in Julesvale, Yono's father mysteriously disappeared at a young age, forcing him to learn the ways of mail by himself. After losing his home in Julesvale due to Badger COs increasingly high taxes, Yono set out to find a way to reach the Postmen's Guild and potentially find his father…

Yono is an extremely mobile bait and punish character all about playing careful neutral and setting his mailbox for big and flashy KOs.

Express Dash

Like all Air characters, Yono is equipped with a unique way to traverse the sky: The Express Dash! By Holding down his double jump, Yono can charge an Airdash that can be aimed in one of eight directions. This allows Yono great mobility, leading to combo extensions that other characters can only dream of!

Down Special: Mailbox

Yono's Down special has him place a mailbox. The mailbox is Yono’s main way to control space on stage and in the air. The mailbox can be filled with up to 3 letters, and depending on the amount of letters currently in the box Down Special can cause the mailbox to fire 3 different projectiles, increasing in strength and utility.

Forward Special: Carrier Kick

Forward Special has 3 different variations, one on the ground, and two in the air. The aerial version can be aimed up or down, with the down version bouncing Yono off the opponent if the move connects. If Yono hits the mailbox with Forward Special he will enter a special spinning state around it. Hold the special button to continue spinning and release while holding the desired direction to leave the spin with an additional Carrier Kick. Each full rotation will add one letter to the mailbox. Note that if the spin state is activated when the mailbox is full a projectile will fire and the mailbox will break.

Up Special: Justice Stamp

By itself, Up Special is a fairly standard recovery move. However, if the move connects with a mailbox, it will transform into a powerful yet committal hammer swing. Note that the move gets stronger and larger with more letters.

Down Air: Rapid Delivery

Mailbox can be grabbed and tossed by hitting it with Dair. This allows quick repositioning and adds a letter. If the mailbox is full, the mailbox will explode at the end of its arc.

I love Yono. I really do. But unfortunately, this character suffers from something I like to call FTG syndrome. Forget The Gimmick syndrome. The mailbox stuff is super cool, and while it's great against CPUs, no real person is just gonna let you even keep that thing out on the field. So unless you're an absolute god who can pull off a perfect combo to fill up the box and hit them with it, it's not worth it. Especially given that massive hammer, with all 3 pieces of mail in it, all goes to waste if they even so much as POKE you when you're doing the attack. It's just not worth it in the long run.

I just wanna finish this long ass comment string off by thanking you sincerely for making this silly guy, I have had so much fun playing him and can't wait to continue doing so for a good while to come. Sincerely thank you, and just so it's clear, please don't feel the need to implement any changes or respond to this or anything if you want to just move on to bigger things or for whatever reason, I just wanted to drop my thoughts on this excellent character!!

hope that wasn't too tiring to read, and finally, thank you again :]

Oh and gameplay aside I probably should mention that there is a pretty big bug I noticed with the current build. I haven't been able to recreate it (not because I tried to, but because I haven't gotten around to it) where my opponent destroyed my level 3 package (with a really weak nair I should add, but that's a design choice I don't really feel confident enough to comment on) and for whatever reason that projectile getting deleted removed my ability to place mailbox, like, at all. for the rest of the stock. Unfortunately we were in a last stock situation so couldn't test whether it reset on death but yeah that's maybe something to look at as well if this reaches you.

I absolutely love the change where bag hits add to mailbox, it really helps Yono be more aggressive while still keeping the planned positioning part of his kit intact. There was really only one part of it that didn't feel right to use which was the fact that this mechanic also follows the whole "if a fourth letter is put in the mailbox explodes around itself", which led me into this weird groove of running offence and then realising the mailbox was full and being more scared to use my strong options, there were especially times where I saw the mailbox slightly away from me and wanted to nair my opponent into it but couldn't because of the system. In other places such as with dair I absolutely love the overflow mechanic but I'm not sure it makes sense in this specific use-case. So yeah if this comment does carry any weight (feel free to ignore it I will still gladly continue to love your work) maybe disabling that mechanic for bag moves would be something to look into?

I have absolutely been loving Yono since I discovered them when I saw them hit top 5 in the contest (massive congrats on that btw) and I can proudly say this in my all time favourite characters. I actually started smiling ear to ear when I booted up the game to find that Yono had gotten some changes and stuff and while I do really like the direction the changes are going in, I just wanted to leave my thoughts as a lowly fan of your work! (Also today I learned that there’s a character limit on comments so this will be a four parter)

This character is actually so cool, holy cow take my points!! Would be cool if air-side special had a little less end lag and you get one refresh if you hit it (like bayonetta side b in smash ultimate). EITHER WAY GREAT STUFF
