Setting the Scene
You started playing CS2 just weeks ago. In-between comments like, "you suck, go back to the kitchen," "delete the game," and "-rep go **** your ***** you **** ******," you buy 3 cases to satisfy the itch that wants to lose money on 12 cent skins.

Meanwhile, your partner, a CS "veteran," jokes that CS favors new players with better skins to keep them playing.

You open the first case. MAC-10 Oceanic, Field Tested. Meh, it's not red or yellow, so you know it's likely worth pellets. Look up the price - yep, next case.

M4A4 Buzz Kill, Minimal Wear. Check Skinport and Buff. That's like 12 bucks. Not bad!

Last case. Your partner is already zoned out because a red skin is a pretty lucky roll and the likelihood of another is low. Rolling...rolling... OMG, it's yellow!! A pretty green knife.

Suddenly, your partner is at your desk, eyes wide, mouth open, checking the wear, yelling "Factory New," double checking the color, and running into the other room to scream without waking the neighbors. You're incredibly confused because you know yellow is like crazy good, maybe 1-2k, but this reaction has your heart pumping.

He comes back and says to you, "Do you even know what you just opened? DO YOU!?!?!"

By now, you're giddy and bouncing as he looks up stuff on his phone. You keep asking, "What? How much is it worth? What is it?"

Finally, he says, "You just opened what most people spend all their money and time on cases trying to open. I've dreamed about opening this knife!" And then he shows me.

Gamma Doppler Emerald Butterfly Knife (Factory New).

As your teammates would say, "** ***** ****** ***!!!!"

So, like any mama's girl/boy, your initial reaction is to call her.

"OMG MOM, you know that game I told you about and how [Partner] opened that $700 knife before and I explained it to you!? I just opened a knife that's worth like 14k USD!!!"

She replied in a slightly suspicious tone, "That's great honey, but I'm still failing to understand how this equates to real life money. You know what they say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Mom please read this guide. Omg please. It's real money.
CS2 and CS2 Skins Explained
Okay mom, so Counter Strike 2 (CS2) is a game like Call of Duty or other first person shooters. You've heard of CoD, right? Or what about that shooting game we used to play on Sega Genesis when I was a kid? It's like that!

So, since it's a shooting game, there are guns and other weapons like knives. But the default guns and knives (etc.) are boring and don't have any pretty decorations on them.

This is where skins come in! You can purchase skins (with real money) from various online markets to use on your guns and knives. It's basically to show off to other players. The game is very popular and even has pro teams who compete for big monies (like you'd watch a football match).

So, consider the CS2 market like the online shop for Candy Crush or other mobile games where you can buy things to make the game more fun, except instead of purchasing from the game itself, you're buying those things from other players (through secured sites).

But please don't do that for Candy Crush. I know that's confusing but this is different.

Anyway, so there are like thousands of skins (decorations) for your weapons in Counter Strike 2. Most of them are dirt cheap, we're talking like no more than 80 cents. Some rare ones are more expensive, like 1-5k. And then there are the REALLY rare ones that are like 10k+ USD.

There's even a knife skin that goes or like 100k+ USD!

What Are CS2 Cases & How Does This = Real $$$?
So, you can buy the weapon skins outright for whatever they cost. But you can also buy cases for approximately $5 that have the chance to drop rare skins. Most likely though, they'll drop the 80 cents or less skins, resulting in a monetary loss.

This is how CS2 makes money off the market. I know in your head you were probably thinking, "How can you buy a case for $5 and get an item worth $14,000?"

But it's literally gambling, except that you still get an item out of it. Just usually a very cheap one.

So once you get whatever item is in the case, you can sell it to other players on one of the (secure, not a scam) CS2 market sites. Since the game is very popular, collectors exist in every niche of the world, and some items are so rare that only a handful have ever existed, these items sell and continue to sell.

After you sell the weapon skin on one of these (legit) sites, you can withdraw the money to your real life bank account!

And yes... I will pay taxes on it. *sigh*
