Aeterna Victrix

Description
An Imperial Unit Overhaul

Aeterna Victrix seeks to make the units of the Empire more historically accurate and in-line with the Eastern Roman / Byzantine soldiers they are inspired by. In doing so, many units from the base game were buffed, because I think the Empire is an underwhelming and under-performing faction to play in the base game.

Careful attention to detail has been paid to individual unit names, and the armor / weapons they use to provide more historical accuracy. For example, all Imperial foot-soldiers with shields now use historically accurate Oval shields.

In addition, all units which use the Pila are now able to throw the Pila (like they should!)

What's New

The entire Imperial unit tree has been changed. The regular Imperial Recruit path (renamed to Imperial Conscript) features soldiers from the Tetrarchy and late 6th century.

The Vigla Recruit path has been expanded to include a heavy infantry, shock infantry, and crossbow line. In addition, the Imperial Cataphract (Imperial Cataphractarii) has some minor changes.

Default Tree

Comitatenses - The new Legionary. A medium-heavy front line infantry troop with an oval shield. Historically, the Comitatenses replaced the Legionary during the later Empire. The Comitatenses have a new helmet, because I thought that the helmet of the Legionaries looked stupid.

Lanciarii Seniores - The Eastern Roman Empire made heavy use of spear infantry, and the Calradian Empire should be no exception. These units come equipped with a powerful pike, or shield + spear combination. They also have throwing javelins.

Sagitarii Herculeans - Armored archers. They are similar to the Palatine Guard from the base game, but have slightly improved armor. Historically, the Sagitarii were the dedicated archers of the Roman Army, and Herculean signified that the unit was particularly strong.

Exculcatores - Heavy Skirmishers. A new unit type for the Empire, these units are equipped with a large number of javelins, and they can use the Menavlion in close-quarters.

Bucelarii - Unchanged from vanilla, but they now stem from a T4 horse archer, which provides a more gradual transition.

Elite Units

The cream of the Byzantine military, these troops will help fulfill the ambitions of any Basileus. The elite troops are inspired by soldiers from the high-late period of the Byzantine Empire.

Cataphractarii - The most elite cavalry force for hundreds of years, the Cataphracts were the pride of the Roman military. These units have seen an increase to some skills, and now carry a couchable lance as well as a more capable one-handed sword.

Varangian Guard - Hardly needing any introduction, these heavy shock infantry will tear an enemy frontline to pieces. They are equipped with a round norse shield for closing the distance, throwing axes for the charge, and an incredibly powerful two handed axe to inflict devastating carnage on the enemies of Rome.

Palatina Guard - The Elite Palace Guard. Dressed to impress and with the skills to match, these units will make you feel like Leonidas commanding the 300. Perfect for forming a shield wall and holding the line while your ranged units destroy the enemy, or to act as the anvil for your Cataphract hammer.

Hastillarius - Elite crossbowman. I miss the feeling of having an army of Rhodok sharpshooters, and I was disappointed with how underperforming crossbowmen were in Bannerlord. The Hastillarius brings 56 bolts to bear, and wields a new immensely powerful handheld ballista. They use a one-handed sword with no shield as a sidearm, and need to be protected.

Technical

This mod was developed for v1.1.5, but should work on newer and later versions.

This mod can NOT be added / removed mid-save. This is due to the new items and addition of new units.

This mod has no dependencies and should function without Harmony, Butterlib, or any other mod.

This mod should have no conflicts with any other mod besides those which modify the Imperial troop tree.

Known Bugs

There is currently an issue when selecting the following troops in the troop tree:
Imperial Defensores, Imperial Comitatenses, Imperial Lanciarii, Imperial Lanciarii Seniores, Imperial Exculcatores, Imperial Sagitarii Herculeans
Wherein they appear in a troop tree by themselves once clicked on. If anyone knows a potential fix to this issue please let me know.

That's All

This is my first mod for Bannerlord, I hope you enjoy. Let me know if there are any issues or criticisms, I would love to have feedback.

Addendum

Thank you for supporting this mod! Currently, I am a full time college student and haven't had the time to update this mod. Anyone has my permission if they would like to re-upload this mod for different localisations (I only have English at the moment). I also got a lot of feedback regarding the troops not entirely replacing the vanilla Imperial troops which are recruited by the AI. I don't know how to change this right now, sorry. I have a lot of ideas planned for this mod, and I'll get around to implementing them when I get free time again. This is only a proof of concept at the moment. Thanks again for checking it out and I hope you enjoy!

Is this mod up to date?

@Arzzzz, the mod changes the recruiting for every imperial culture settlement in the game. Currently the AI seem to recruit a mix of the new troops and the vanilla imperial troops. Not sure how to change this yet. I'll update the mod at some point

@Sumerian copper salesmen, thanks for the feedback. Maybe over the summer I'll get back into this mod and add stuff for other factions. I'll have to see

@Gman , I don't know how to change the troops the AI Lord recruit. I might investigate this at some point in the future because I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to change. Unfortunately that won't be for a while. Thanks for checking out the mod anyway

the imperial vigla recruits are marked as infantry despite being cavalry, it completely ruins my formations and is very annoying

is the mod only for eastern empire or all 3?
Gman Nov 24, 2023 @ 11:30am
Cool mod, although im having trouble with it. I'm currently running with RBM, Serve as a Soldier, dismemberment Plus, and Harmony. Nothing that adds or removes the troop tree's.

So far the empire lords are not using the new troop tree, continuing instead with the vanilla one. Does this mod need Adonny's trooper changer, or go in a specific order?
