Steel Extraction

Description

⚒️ Convert unwanted stone chunks into steel — Clean your map and get resources at the same time!

🔧 4 extraction options:

4 crafting for 1 stone = 10 steel
6 crafting for 3 stones = 30 steel

12 crafting for 1 stone = 20 steel
16 crafting for 3 stones = 60 steel

🧠 Skill-based steel yield: Higher Crafting skill unlocks bonus steel output from the same chunks (e.g., 30 → 60 steel).

📚 Experience gain: Colonists gain Crafting XP while extracting steel — they get smarter with every chunk!

📋 Ingredient filter UI: Choose exactly which stone types (granite, slate, marble, etc.) to use for extraction. One bill covers them all — no UI clutter!

🧰 Fully integrated into vanilla crafting: Works at both the Crafting Spot and Stonecutter’s Table.

🏕️ Great for tribal starts or resource-scarce biomes where steel is rare or deep drills are a late-game luxury.

Recipes are available from the start and require no research.
Works with all vanilla stone chunk types.

I suggest to play with Mad Skills.

Because skill decay is just stupid for me.

can you make an update to the vac chunks on asteroids for the new dlc

I just did a quick test in dev mode, all my colonist have lower than 6 crafting level. I put the 16 crafting recipes of steel extraction on top both in the crafting spot and in the Stonecutter's table, I tried all the available recipes that don't require any skills such as granite blocks or any kind of blocks, they do the job just fine, same for crafting spot, despite the 16 crafting recipe being at the top, they craft knifes or bows just fine as well, same for the steel extraction that require 4 or 6 crafting minimum.
Maybe some other mod conflict?

Ok. I have to check this out because it looks like a serious problem.

I have a minor problem with this mod, not sure if just me. I love the new recipes for more advanced steel extraction but it seems to create problems with using the bench for other things. As an example, if I have the 16 crafting version at a bench, no one with a crafting level under 16 will use that bench at all, this is with other recipes existing at that bench that do not have a crafting level requirement.

If it wasn't for you I would have kept it the same as before.
I had fun trying to find new and better ways to improve my mod.
Thanks a lot! I love feedback such as yours!
Have fun!

Mod updated.
Added filters so no more multiple bills for each stone type like before (8 recipes in total)
Now at 4 recipes. Skill requirements added as well, both for low level and high levels.

4 crafting for 1 stone = 10 steel
6 crafting for 3 stones = 30 steel

12 crafting for 1 stone = 20 steel
16 crafting for 3 stones = 60 steel

Have fun everyone.

You are absolutely right about the several bills part, thanks for the info and the testing by your side.
I will try to see if I can do something about it right now.

Oh and a "mod option" to change the amount of "work" required for the extraction, and maybe another to change the amount of steel received from from the extraction? :)
