From Starting Your Journey to Advancing and Conquering
Here's a checklist you can use to help you track your progress and goals in Monster Hunter World:
Low Rank (LR):
- Upgrade chosen weapon using low-rank monster materials.
- Aim for basic LR armor sets like Jagras or Bone for survival and Attack Boost.

High Rank (HR):
- Craft high-rank version of your weapon type and upgrade it.
- Consider HR armor sets like Rathalos, Odogaron, or Legiana for better skills and protection.

End of High Rank:
- Maximize the potential of your HR weapon. Look for high-rank Elder Dragon weapons.
- Continue building HR armor sets. Nergigante, Teostra, and Vaal Hazak sets offer powerful skills.

Iceborne:
- Upgrade HR weapon into a Master Rank (MR) version, focusing on raw damage.
- Start with the base MR armor provided in Iceborne.
- Consider MR armor sets like Nargacuga, Tigrex, or Velkhana for skills that enhance both survivability and damage.

Mid-Iceborne:
- Work towards MR Kulve Taroth or Safi'jiiva weapons for powerful options.
- Aim for mixed armor sets with skills like Critical Boost, Weakness Exploit, and Health Boost.
- Consider Gold Rathian and Silver Rathalos sets for valuable set bonuses.

Endgame Iceborne:
- Acquire and fully upgrade weapons like Ruiner Nergigante or Raging Brachydios weapons.

Since a new player isn't going to know just by looking at the stats, that the armor they're being given for virtually nothing, is something they shouldn't use because it's TOO good for the first half of the game or more.

I'd say you already ruined a part of your experience, The Conductor. One or two of those fights, at least, should have at least made you attempt to not get hit by the giant monsters to survive the hunt. I know of at least one other case where someone new to the game made the defender armor because it looks cool / seems powerful, only to never really get into the game because the game ways way too easy.

I don't blame him. Fighting giant monsters has far less appeal when the little tiny human appears to take hits better than it does.

I'll just share a brief story of a friend of mine - who decided to start playing MHW ...a while back

...and he quit because he found it to be too "slow" or "clunky" - but the guy never had to learn why it is that way, which is at the core of MH's combat - because he said the first dozen hunts he took were way too easy and he found it annoying that he was "knocked back so much" - but didn't realize he would have been dead way sooner had he not been using such overpowered Defender gear.

Well, he didn't keep playing much after that, but if he had he would definitely have hit a fight that was actually a little testing, and would not have learned anything about what skills and whatever else are the ones helping him, and which aren't, and he would have hit a gaming wall.

@The Conductor Yes defender gear is overpowered. Its purpose to to help you speed run past the World Content to get you into Iceborne. If youre completely new I would suggest not using it and enjoy the base game experience first.

Im on my third play through and haven't touched the game in about 3 years so im using it as I re familiarize myself with it.

Is defender gear like overpowered or something? I bought Iceborne and I am very new. I saw this blue armor in my inventory, equipped it and like everything seems so easy.

Im still low rank, but something seems off and I dont want to ruin my experience. I just killed a leigana.
