TOMOE GOZEN: DAIMYO



THE MOD: Please READ this first

This mod is meant to be played as the MINAMOTO KISO FACTION ONLY. Due to the limitations to editing playing as other factions can cause some audio issues to generals voices so don't complain this is an issue when playing as a different faction. I tried my hardest to get this to work and this is as good as it can get to play as a female daimyo, but luckily the Kiso Minamoto have an amazing unique history allowing me to bend the historical rules. Tomoe is a fully fledged daimyo and can traverse the campaign map and uses female voice.

BODYGUARD UNIT: Gozen's Jorōgumo Riders

Tomoe Gozen has a personal spear cavalry bodyguard unit armed with deadly naginatas. This all female bodyguard unit was formed and trained by Tomoe Gozen herself from the widows of fallen samurai and is named after the legendary Jorōgumo spider who's female can change her appearance into that of a beautiful woman seeking men to seduce, whom she then binds in her silk and devours. Just the knowledge of Tomoe Gozen's Jorōgumo Riders on the battlefield can terrify enemy infantry not only with their ferocity, but also bring the fear of shame to the bravest samurai of being killed by a woman.

The unit on the field is to instil fear in the enemy and morale in your allies. Their main goal is archer killers but be wary of spears if using as flanking on them. They can also be deployed in woodland outside the box which can be really handy, and they can rally the troops and should be used tactically. The Jorōgumo Riders have 60 riders I didn't want to use bows because felt I needed a shock cavalry to even the odds a bit because it won't be long before the crap hits the fan right. But at the very least we now have a female daimyo and playing for many turns works as it should do.

COMPATIBILITY: Things to consider

The startpos is edited, so I recommend people play this campaign, the Minamoto Kiso, on it's own terms, most other mods WILL work, but avoid any that have a startpos. The only other issue is playing as Tomoe is she is married to another woman. To help with this unimmersive issue I made a story, please read below, to not only soften the anomaly but decided to include the wife to produce children. Anyway it is what it is and I hope you all enjoy playing as Tomoe Gozen like I have.



THE STORY: Based loosely on true events

In 1174, Minamoto Yoshinaka convinced the clan for one final battle to end the Taira "once and for all" and the two armies finally engaged at a pass near Kyoto. The battle raged for hours and seemed to be going the Minamoto's way when an ally of the Taira arrived late in the afternoon. With overwhelming odds it seemed all was lost and Yoshinaka and a few of his most loyal samurai volunteered to hold back the enemy in a "last stand" to allow his cousins and what was left of the army escape.

Kanehira and Tomoe Gozen begged Yoshinaka to allow them to stay and die fighting, but he ordered them to leave. Yoshinaka knew that if the clan had any hope to survive, his wife Mariko would need Imai Kanehira and Tomoe Gozen to defend what was left. Although reluctant to leave his brothers side Kanehira obeyed but Tomoe wasn't going anywhere. Yoshinaka told Tomoe to flee because he wanted to "die with honor among his chosen samurai" and he said that he would be "ashamed if he died with a woman." Tomoe understood and along with Imai Kanehira began the retreat.

Minamoto Yoshinaka and his chosen fought bravely and died heroes. The Minamoto returned to what was left of their homelands and after initial internal struggles the lands were split between the Kamakura faction and the late Minamoto Yoshinaka's Kiso faction led by his now widow Minamoto Mariko, foster brother Imai Kanehira and Tomoe Gozen, the latter being proclaimed "acting" daimyo by Mariko herself after Kanehira politely refused the initial offer and recommending his sister Tomoe.



This caused serious backlash and offence to not only the Kamakura faction, but to most of the surrounding clans not only because Tomoe Gozen was a woman, but also because she had in their words "no Minamoto heir and therefore no right to be daimyo bringing shame upon the name of the clan" setting seeds of discontent in the region. To address the uncertainty a crisis meeting of regional dignatories was held at the request of the Kamakura Minamoto.

Minamoto Mariko used all her guile and cunning at the meeting, and was quick to dispel any confusion by reminding those gathered that she was now "head of the Minamoto Kiso Clan." She would rule jointly with Tomoe Gozen who would "assume" Yoshinaka's place until her first born son would eventually become daimyo in his name, which only led to more suspicion and rumors that either Mariko or Tomoe were pregnant at the time of Yoshinaka's death.

Many walked out in disgust claiming the whole affair a "shameful display" but others seemed indifferent and even acceptable to Mariko's wishes how to conduct her clan's business. Tomoe Gozen was after all a formidable warrior, and had proven herself beyond doubt in battle commanding hundreds of soldiers under Minamoto Yoshinaka. Even the Taira, when sued for peace would initially publicly ridicule Tomoe Gozen but had no appetite to continue a war against a "woman."



Again Mariko's cunning had averted a disaster and a fragile peace descended upon the provinces. The Taira although recently victorious were badly mauled and warned the Minamoto against expanding South and directly threatened them with annihilation should they cross into Taira lands. Mariko knew the peace would not last, and time was against them but she knew she had made all the right decisions.

Tomoe Gozen as her daimyo was a blessing, even a master stroke, for now. It is said Mariko took Tomoe to one side when Tomoe Gozen became reluctant to lead the clan and told her:

"Tomoe, this is our clan, our home. I will be by your side as if you were my beloved Kiso and I was still his wife. Now I am your wife. They will come for us, eventually, and I need you now more than ever. You and Kanehira is all I have left and if you abandon me now, then I will surely die. Would my death be as unbearable as a living death wandering the land as a Ronin?"

Tomoe Gozen finally agreed to become an "acting" daimyo for the clan and in a final act of reconciliation, Minamoto Mariko and Tomoe Gozen agreed to the offer of North and South Shinano provinces conceding the rich gold mines of Izu province to the Kamakura Minamoto. Although surrounded on all sides by potential enemies and meagre beginnings, they have vowed not only to build the Kiso Minamoto back to it's former glory, but to eventually avenge the death of Yoshinaka and to one day destroy the Taira. A debt that can only be paid in blood.
