In this guide you will find out:
  • What are Promotional or Relegation matches
  • How CS:GO Ranks translates into CS2 Rating
  • How does CS Rating work

Promotional or relegation matches
What are promotional matches in CS2 and how do they work? Why do you get so few Elo points after some games in CS2 Premier Mode?

Update: Valve patched out promotional matches for every 1,000 points on October 12. Now they only occur at "color boundaries" every 5,000.

Original piece: CS2 Premier Mode CS Rating world leaderboards have a new feature called "Promotion Matches." The approach in various forms previously existed in other games, such as League of Legends, but Valve fans faced it for the first time. The following article explains what are Promotion Matches and how they work.

When do you play a Promotion Match in CS2?
They occur at every 1,000 Elo, serving as a kind of barrier in Premier Mode. Sometimes, because of them, you will gain or lose very few points. This means your next game is a promotion or relegation match. Winning those is required to advance to the next "rank."

Every step in CS Rating is around 100-200 Elo*. But these games can award you as low as +1 points, like in the picture below. It reduces the amount of points and makes it harder for a player to advance to the next level after promotion. But at the same time, it works both ways, since it's harder to derank as well.

*UPD 8.11.23: As some people stated in the comments and was also observed by the author of this guide, it is possible to get up to 371 Elo or higher for winning a match and/or being on a winning streak (Thanks MaxPower)

How CS:GO Ranks translates into CS2 Rating
To get rid of side platforms, Valve has completely changed the approach to the distribution of ranks in Counter-Strike 2 compared to CS:GO, where matchmaking had ranks from Silver to Global Elite.

In the new game, the main competitive mode is Premier Matchmaking, in which the entire gameplay is as close as possible to e-sports competitions. In addition, Premier Matchmaking uses the CS Rating, an Elo score based only on wins and losses. Read more about that in the next chapter.

To get your rating, you have to win 10 matches. Rankings range from 0 to 35,000, with a different color for every 5000 Elos. And here's how Elos are distributed in CS2 compared to the ranks in CS:GO:

The new system from Valve is more understandable and accessible than the previous one. The rating shows how close or far a player is to the next rank by showing if the next match is a relegation match (meaning if lost - the player gets a lower rank) or a promotion match (meaning a player will rank up if that match is won). In addition, it is clear how points are earned and how a particular match affects the ranking.

NOTE: below are listed ranks from different sources, thus Points and their relative CS:GO ranks differ, it is believed that latter source is the definitive one and first is outdated / used in CS2 Beta

How does CS Rating work
Counter-Strike 2 Rank System and CS Rating - How Do They Work?
On the night of September 1, Valve updated Counter-Strike 2, giving access to the game to all those who had Prime in CS:GO and matchmaking rank. In addition to adding a new map and changing the number of rounds in the match to a total of 24, the game also received a new rating system - CS Rating.

How is the CS2 rating calculated?
Rating will be added or subtracted based on several factors such as match outcome, personal statistics, opponent rank, and more. Also, all those who will play in Premier mode will need to play 10 calibration matches. Remember that it will not be possible to start searching for a match in a party of four or five - you will only be able to invite two friends*.

*UPD 8.11.23: Information seems outdated, you can have a party with up to 4 players(Thanks MaxPower)

*UPD 9.11.23: Confirmed by Release Notes for 8.11.2023
Początkowo opublikowane przez Valve:

Release Notes for 11/8/2023
[MATCHMAKING]
  • Parties of four are now able to queue for Premier mode

In some way, the updated rating in CS2 can be called a rethought ELO, like on FACEIT. Now it is calculated to thousands of a point from 0.00 to 35.00. Depending on the number, the rating will change color, being similar to the color of skin rarity: from white for 0 - 5,000 to gold, as for extremely rare items for owners of a rating of 30,000 - 35,000 or more.

In turn, the number will be displayed in the profile. This means that all former Global Elites will be those whose rating indicator will exceed 30,000. Previous ranks remained relevant only for regular matchmaking, while on each map the rank will be different, and teammates and opponents of the corresponding rank will be selected for you. It can be assumed that Valve motivates players to expand their map pool slightly.

World and regional leaderboards
Also, after the update, players can get into the leaderboards. The top 1000 players in the world will have a separate leaderboard, but now there are also regional leaderboards (Europe, North America, South America, Asia, China, Australia, Africa). There is also an opportunity to have the top of your circle of friends.

Keep in mind that the MR12 system with the old overtime now applies to all game modes, which means that to win, it is enough to win 13 rounds. The developers have not yet announced anything about the fate of the short MR8 mode.

How they are calculating the points system is crap. Just lost 5 in a row and have lost over 1400 points. Only 1 game was close the others were cake walks. I have found games where there are less elo ranked players on the opposite team, are the ones I lose the most points in. It is also these games my team usually loses and the games are not usually close either. The non ranked players are wild card players more often than not they are the better players. I dunno what I can do, when I keep getting matched with team mates that are less skilled than the other team most of the time, and then lose lots of points at the same time. You would think you would lose less points when you are on an extended losing streak, because of such a system of being matched poorly.

@iKrax yes, I can confirm that indeed you can get 950+ points for a single match, I guess that is due to Valve trying to change balance of ranks

Yesterday i won +900 pts in one map, and the other next 2 maps gave me +800 and i dont know why bc before that i won +350pts

@MaxPower thanks for the heads up, I will update the guide in the future to reflect such changes!
MaxPower 5 listopada 2023 o 5:27
It's a bit outdated by now, you can easily get more than 200 points if you are on a win streak. And the information that you can't play premier with 5 is wrong, that only concerns 4 premates.
