A New Sensible Family 3

Description

For CK3 1.12.5

Tired of starting off an orphaned, only-child without any recollection of who your parents once were? Wouldn't you like some company as you begin your world-conquering? Maybe an older sister, your best friend, but may have been responsible for the assassination of your father? Or a little brother with a claim on your title to serve as your heir, at least until you have children of your own? Heck, who wants to start a medieval intrigue game without a mother?!

What does it do?
A New Sensible Family 3 adds in a decision (Reflect on Family) which can be taken for any playable character in the first year. If your character already has a father, it will skip his creation, and allow you to start with your mother instead. Likewise, if your character already has a mother, it will skip her creation, and allow you to start with your siblings. If you already have siblings, you will be able to add more.

All family members will look like you (with the exception of one parent, should you attach them to an existing dynasty and choose for them to favor that side of the family's DNA instead) and their ages all dynamically adjust to yours, regardless if you start at 30, 20, or 10. If you create a sibling that is the same age as you, you will both gain the twin trait. You may "reroll" every created family member and then further adjust their traits, should you wish to. Additionally, with siblings, you can adjust their parentage, potentially creating bastard and half siblings.

All family members generated through the event will use your main character's DNA as a base, while a number of subtle changes are imposed on their portrait, which should help prevent making a family of clones. Identical twins will, however, share your DNA precisely.

The event encourages you to have your father die, so there are no complications when it comes to inheritance, but you are not required to. If you want to keep him around and not worry about inheritance, select the depose option at the end, and he should be prevented from gaining your titles on your death.

There is also the additional option of creating an appropriate spouse for you, if your character is unmarried and adult when you take the decision. Created spouses have a variety of options, from having their own parents created first to being connected to existing dynasties in the world.

Limitations
Unfortunately, if you do not already have a historical father, you will need to join your father's house when you create him (or your mother's, if you'd prefer), adopting his house motto and coat of arms (which you can then modify). This is necessary to make sure that any siblings you create show up properly on the Dynasty Tree page. If you do not join your father's (or mother's) dynasty, any siblings will be part of their dynasties and not yours.

The event does not block you from using it, even when it wouldn't make sense, such as being a newborn, a venerable senior (thus having potentially 100+ year old parents) or already having a massive, complicated historical family. My design philosophy was to let players be the ultimate judge of what is and is not appropriate for their game. I do not plan on adding game rules, as it is a one-time event and not in need of game-lasting rules.

You are not limited to the number of siblings you can create, though you won't be able to make multiple sets of twins. I do not recommend more than 2 siblings, but that is my personal taste. There is no mechanical or game reason you cannot have more, though your dynasty tree is might become a quick, hot mess.

FAQs
  1. Is this compatible with X mod?

Almost certainly. I cannot think of a reason why this mod would interfere or conflict with another mod. It modifies no vanilla files. The only situation I could think of is a mod that set ups complicated families to begin with, but I cannot see why you'd want to use this mod in such a case.

  2. Why are my siblings not connected to me in the Dynasty Tree?!

I already answered this in the Limitations section. You have to join your father's house (or your mother's) in order for siblings (that are part of your house) to then show up properly. You can edit your dynasty anyhow, so it's only an annoyance if you spent a lot of time creating a custom coat of arms prior to game start, as you'll need to do it again.

  3. Can this be used in multiplayer?

    Yes.

  4. Is this save game compatible?

It should be. But the decision can only be used in the first game year, so if your save is past that point it won't be useable.

  5. Will you add more family member options, like grandparents, aunts, nephews, and cousins?

All of that is possible (to a point, as you can't create anyone who died in the past), but goes beyond the scope of the mod as originally envisioned. This is meant to be a starting point of your dynasty, to give you some kind of origin story for custom or ahistorical characters.

  6. Why do all my sisters appear so masculine?

All of your family members inherit your character's DNA, which is then just slightly altered so that they look related, rather than identical. However, if you have extremely masculine traits, such as a thick neck, square jaw, etc. you'll inevitably end up with sisters and a mother that also share these masculine features, sometimes comically so. No real way around this without creating random family members, which would not look like your character at all. Until Paradox expands modding capabilities, this is an unfortunate limitation.

  7. Can I integrate this mod into my own or use it as a base for another mod?

Absolutely. Just provide credit where it's due.

Credits
Speaking of credit:

Big shout out to Olympia, who created A New Sensible Family 2, and which this mod updates to the current patch and has added some additional features to (such as naming your relatives, connecting your parents or yourself to existing dynasties, making yourself or your father a peasant leader who took your title by force, etc.)

They've given their blessing for this continuance of their work (which I'd originally just included as part of another mod I made, Love Marriage Family, and that makes me very happy.

@Jet Hmm I suppose I could do that for the non-dominant parent, like I do for your wife and her parents. The dominant parent would need to match your own culture/religion, however, otherwise your own would make little sense.

Suggestion: dialogue to pick out culture/religion of family members.

I was kinda thinking of that when considering an elder kings 2 submod of this to do the same for the race of other family members (orc, human, etc)

Best mod for the games, hands down

@Lunarthrope Hmm. I'm assuming you began the game with a king or emperor... did you change your dynasty through the course of the Reflect on my Family events? That's the only thing I could imagine affecting it.

I seem to be having an issue. Whenever I reflect on my family, the house and dynasty banners for my character just disappears. Neither the banners for my initial house and dynasty or the new one with the Reflect on my Family decision are there. It is a bit minor, but the bonuses from those would be nice.

@HonestChanges Once only per house, I'm afraid.

Firstly, What FANTASTIC Mod! Thanks for it!. Secondly and question I am using this Mod but only created a Mother, Father and Brother BUT I want to add more family now to my current save? Is this possible at all or simply one use only?.

@Rylock

I guess they use a different calendar; after all, AGOT is set in a fantasy world with no real-world months. But who knows?
Rylock  [author] Apr 22 @ 4:20pm
@HunterCalhounVA That's... odd. All spawned characters are technically "born" on the day the events are run, so all your created family members should share a birthday. I don't even know how one would go about changing that. Does AGOT use a different calendar, perhaps? Maybe it affects that.

I have to say, while I LOVE this mod in vanilla CK3, using it alongside the AGOT mod is a bit funky. Just today I was making a playthrough and I spawned in some family members for my house, but the birth dates were real crazy.

In vanilla CK3, all characters spawned with the mod have the same day and month before aging. However, when using it in conjunction with AGOT, all the family members had different birthdays and kept aging weirdly. For example: I gave my character two sisters who had the twin trait, meaning that they should both have the same date of birth and age up together, but this was not the case. One of the twins' ID said it was born three months before her sister...

I literally have no idea what is happening?
