šŸ† THE ULTIMATE 2v2 BRAWLHALLA GUIDE šŸ„‡

Using terms to identify specific actions in the game help improve the understanding you and your teammates will have together as a team. Terms go hand & hand with Call-Outs.

ā€¢ Neutral Light - the attack performed by pressing the light attack button while standing on the ground and not pressing a direction or, in certain configurations, holding up. Ex: Unarmed Neutral Light, abbr. Unarmed NLight

ā€¢ Side Light - the attack performed by pressing the light attack button while standing on the ground while holding left or right. Ex: Hammer Side Light, abbr. Hammer SLight.

ā€¢ Down Light - the attack performed by pressing the light attack button while standing on the ground and holding the down button. Ex: Sword Down Light, abbr. Sword DLight.

ā€¢ Neutral Air - the attack performed by pressing the light attack button while airborne and either not pressing a direction or while holding up. Ex: Unarmed Neutral Air, abbr. Unarmed NAir.

ā€¢ Side Air - the attack performed by pressing the light attack button while airborne and holding either left or right. Ex: Spear Side Air, abbr. Spear SAir.

ā€¢ Down Air - the attack performed by pressing the light attack button while airborne and holding the down button. Ex: Katar Down Air, abbr. Katar DAir.

ā€¢ Signature ā€“ same as Heavy attack. Each Legend has six unique Signatures.

ā€¢ Gravity Cancel - the act of spot dodging in the air, and then quickly using either a light or heavy attack, which will then execute as the grounded version of the move. Abbr. GC.

ā€¢ Active Frames is the duration of your attackā€™s hitbox (i.e. the number of game frames during which the attack can hurt you). Active frames are preceded by start-up frames (charge-up time), and followed by recovery frames (recovery time) -- the character is vulnerable and usually cannot hurt/move during charge-up and recovery times.

ā€¢ Cooldown is additional delay between using the same move two or more times in a row. Makes spamming a single attack over and over a very bad idea.

ā€¢ Weapon Starving is when a player throws weapons off the map and/or keeps players away from dropped weapons in an effort to make their opponent barehanded.

ā€¢ Fast Fall - holding down while in the air to fall faster.

ā€¢ Slide Charging - performing a Signature while running off a platform and having the signature charge while you are slipping and falling off the ledge.

ā€¢ Ledge Cancel - approaching a soft platform from the bottom and holding down as soon as you're on top of it to ā€œlandā€ immediately

ā€¢ Team Comboing is any combo executed by two players to juggle a third player back and forth between them continually, most often using multiple moves that may send the third party into specific areas of the map where another move can hit and they do it over and over with good timing. If spaced correctly, the trapped player has no opportunity to dodge or move away between the hits, and continues to accumulate damage until landing the final strike with a strong move knocking the doomed victim into the K.O zone. These combos requires a significant degree of coordination between the two players, and therefore most commonly seen in 2v2 matches.

In-Game What Should You Do?
To perform in the gamemode you must set a proper mindset to LEARN this gamemode as a different entity then ranked 1s. So many players merge the two game mode mindsets and donā€™t realize thatā€™s what is holding them back from reaching their peak. If you and your partner have ALREADY learned your specific team combos and proper follow ups but still struggle in the queue you may want to execute this check listāœ…:

ā€¢ Make sure the team members glance at health percentages before they go for a team combo or else they'll miss the timing neccesary to hit the combo.

ā€¢ Make sure the team establishes roles for who's aggressing and who's staying back when edge guarding or setting up a team combo

ā€¢ The Support is required to glance at his team mate more, if they're in vc they should try to use communication to get into sync.

ā€¢ If you find friendly fire a continuous issue you may be aggressing at the same time which results in hitting eachother

ā€¢ Make sure you always establish who's taking the lead and who's supporting prior to the match to help with positioning and awareness

ā€¢ Make sure to mix up your edge guard positioning: Lead goes off stage while Support stays on stage ready to cover the area above lead, Lead and support stays on stage with lead covering high. Hereā€™s an example of a proper edge guard:

ā€¢ If you hit an opponent off stage while your team mate is on stage 2v1 the guy still on stage. If one of them tries to shark you, trick the opponent into feeling like theyā€™re involved by getting close to them and throwing out safe whiffs towards them while in reality you are actively attacking in the 2v1 against the team mate on stage (rare occasion but this is very viable mind games for a situation you may encounter)

ā€¢ Make sure whenever you have a chance to glance at your team mate to make sure your positioning is in sync do so, have follow ups ready to be executed, or when you knock an opponent off stage look at eachother's positioning in that instance to quickly set up team combos.

ā€¢ if you play fast characters with speedy trade weapons youā€™re probably playing a supportive role, following up as well as guarding and interrupting hits on your teammate is your goal. You also want to keep the enemy at bay, hopefully your teammate is doing well and the entire time youā€™re enabling him.

ā€¢ If you arenā€™t playing support you usually have hard hitting weapons or a selfish weapon like axe or greatsword where you want to go for long follow ups or commit to your work. This is fine, just make sure you still get quick and easy follow ups and arenā€™t hitting your teammate, heā€™s there watching your back and making sure u arenā€™t interrupted. Youā€™ll probably do a brunt of the damage but you really arenā€™t working alone. Your goal is to do damage and keep control of the map.

ā€¢ Offstage play is completely different in doubles, itā€™s no longer you versus the guy below or above you, you just need to keep an eye out for where your teammate is and how far away the opponent is.

ā€¢ Second part of offstage is saving and blocking a save, you can usually tell if you are in a situation to save your teammate, watch out for the chance for your opponents can block the save.

ā€¢ Targeting one opponent and killing them early is always a good idea. Mastering team combos is most beneficial for the 2v1 situations as you and your teammate can secure a win almost instantly from properly executing this concept ā¬‡ļø

ā€¢ The best teams are always looking for their combos, theyā€™re looking to sandwich two opponents, quick passes for damage, or just hits into sigs for finishes. If you arenā€™t playing for combos and passes chances are youā€™re just sitting there doing 2 one vs ones, not really your goal unless youā€™re both somehow the best ones players ever born.
Overcome the ā€œexperienceā€ obstacles
While climbing the ranked 2s gamemode you will find that some teams overwhelm your team way faster than others. This is because they have more ā€œexperienceā€ within the gamemode and go into every match with some concept of a planned attack. The higher the elo/level a team is the more you will see their ability to convert their positions into a advantage based attack system where they will be able to perform multiple different move chains that may bounce from one to another similar to a team combo called Follow Ups.

With follow ups you can secure early leads without having to heavily commit to a rather risky move depending on your position. The concept of follow ups goes under the radar but are extremely rewarding when done properly.

Itā€™s a good idea to designate someone who will be consistently looking to follow up as someone else plays a more stable and controlling role, which we will talk about next section. For the most part the premise here is simple, see your teammate land a hit, hit the person again before theyā€™re out of stun frames. Here is an example of follow ups securing a kill very quickly ā¬‡ļø

This concept of gameplay is peaked when you have proper call outs similar to a FPS game and itā€™s competitive aspects. Having a proper ā€œmap visionā€ allows you to understand where you and your teammate may need to position or who you may need to target to secure the win.
Personal Improvement when separated
If you want to improve and you're willing to put in effort, but you don't know how to practice well, you can try following these steps.

Master Movement:

Many players are jumping into the game and the best way to really get your footing is to have your movement mastered in brawlhalla. Check out how to dash skip and begin your journey on mastering this amazing movement technique every Valhallan uses.

Learning Top Player techniques:

First, identify one technique that you want to learn from the following list and master it. ā¬‡ļø

Once you've picked one technique, play games where you can focus on practicing that technique, don't focus on winning and let other aspects of the game play on autopilot.

Start using the technique in those games as much as you can, even if it isn't good in those situations. This helps you to learn where it can be a strong option and where it is usually a poor one.

After getting the hang of it, try playing regular games where you try to win, but remember to bring out that option when you think it will be effective.

Breaking Bad Habits:

Determine the bad habit you want to break and play games while focusing on avoiding using that bad habit with this practice method ā¬‡ļø

When you use the bad habit, even if you don't get punished for it, think about what you could've done instead, and if you don't know, you can ask about it, or you can try various things out in future scenarios to find other options that work.

Remember that most bad habits are only bad because they are the sole option you use in that situation. After learning other options and breaking the bad muscle memory, your old bad habit can be a good option now that it isn't your only option.
Team Combo Meta
Team Combos have become a required component of the 2v2 game plan to be at a consistent diamond level. Team combos derive from the older concept of ā€œBlack Holesā€ where the team would only need to do one specific move back and forth repeatedly until the opponent became so damaged they would immediately be knocked into the k.o zone.

Throughout the years the top 0.1% have evolved the game and have created many different ways to do team combos, but many new players donā€™t know how to properly setup and practice these said team combos. In the video below it explains how to setup a custom lobby to practice team combos with your teammate ā¬‡ļø

Now that you know how to practice the combos you may be questioning yourselves and saying ā€œwhat combos should we even go for?ā€ and luckily the community has grown to appreciate 2s by supplying tons on material on this topic. The videos below contain ALL the combos that can be done with that specific weapon ā¬‡ļø

Final Thoughts
Doubles has always been in a sense, while it didnā€™t really get its own ranked queue till later itā€™s always held a special place in the peopleā€™s hearts and gameplay. Doubles has been side by side with singles throughout all time in Brawlhalla, every online event, and every lan has its own doubles tournament. Brawlhalla has grown with the gamemode ever existent, through personalized balancing and continued support doubles has made its place right next to singles in the game and no one could imagine Brawlhalla without both game modes.

Many players discredit this game mode but it has been the pillar to a vast amount of successful players in the past.

Take this opportunity to really understand the game mode and the importance of mastering it.
