Introduction
Yamagi Quake II is an alternative way of playing Quake II on a more modernized engine, with new features so that the game can run nicely on newer machines.

Furthermore if you didn't like the changes made on the Kex version of Quake II or simply want a DRM / Bethesda.net free version of the game, this guide is for you.

This also allows you to play the expansion packs and multiple other mods made for it.
First Steps
Let's begin, first things first you need to acquire the game.

You can get the game on Steam:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2320/Quake_II/

Or on GOG[www.gog.com]

I know it sounds backwards to buy the game, considering you can just use the Kex port after buying.

But remember that we are here to use the Yamagi port and we need the .pak files from the original game for it to work.
Downloading the Source Port (Windows | Linux | Mac)
To download the source port simply go to this page[www.yamagi.org]

Now look for both the "Official and Unofficial Downloads" section.

Click and download the correct version for your operating system of choice.

Windows users can download the "Precompiled Windows Binaries"

Linux users can download it through a package manager, since it is the easiest way to do so.

For Arch based distros:

yay -S yamagi-quake2

For Ubuntu based distros:

sudo apt-get install -y yamagi-quake2

For Mac users, the download options are located under the "Unofficial Downloads" section.
Setting Up Quake II + Expansions
After you downloaded and extracted (if needed) the package for your operating system, you can move on to setting up the game's content.

To do that move over to the baseq2 folder of your Steam or GOG install of the game.

Now copy the following files and folder:
  • pak0.pak
  • pak1.pak
  • pak2.pak
  • video folder

And place those files on the baseq2 folder of your Yamagi Quake II install.

And you should be done.

The only difference between operating systems is where the Yamagi folder is located, for Windows it should be where you extracted the files and for Linux and Mac wherever your system installs packages by default (most likely /usr/share/).

Now to set up the expansions, go back to the Steam or GOG install folder and copy the following folders:

  • xatrix
  • rogue

Place them on the main Yamagi install folder.

To launch them you will need to create a shorcut with the -game xatrix and -game rogue parameters separately or type the commands on the console when opening the game.
Setting Up the Music Files
We can't have Quake II without it's awesome sountrack right?

To get them to work with Yamagi, we need to get the music in the .ogg format.

However we don't need to convert anything, we can just copy them from our Steam or GOG copy of the game.
Find the music folder that is located under /steamapps/common/Quake 2/rerelease/baseq2/

Copy these files:
  • track02.ogg to track21.ogg

Now go back to the baseq2 folder of your Yamagi install and paste these files inside the music folder. If it doesn't exist, create it.

But wait the music will not play if you just leave it like that!

The final step to get it to work is to rename all the track files so that they only contain the track number.

For example:
track02.ogg
Rename to:
02.ogg

That should get the music to play correctly.

Or if you to be really oldschool you can use your original Quake II CD to play the music in the game.
Disabling Texture Filtering
To disable texture filtering and get that pixelated look back, you simply need to type one command on the in-game console.

Open the console using the ~ key and type the following command:

gl_texturemode gl_nearest

And you're done, now you can enjoy those chunky graphics the way they were meant to be.
Final Notes
That should be everything you need to get the game to work properly.

Of course you can still change things in the options menu to your liking, but at the very least you will have a working source port by now.

I would like also to thank the folks behing the Yamagi Quake II project for their awesome work and dedication to help keep this game alive.

If you can support them in any way please do so!

And if you have any suggestions to improve this guide, feel free to leave them in the comments below.
