BRENDA CARLTON

Brenda is driven by her desire to create compelling stories and achieve success in her career. Her dedication to her job borders on obsession. She describes herself as constantly working, whether it's writing, broadcasting, webcasting, or microblogging. Her work seems to be her life, and she's constantly focused on getting the best stories and staying ahead of the competition.

Brenda displays a talent for manipulating situations and people to her advantage. She sets traps, creates scenarios, and impersonates individuals in order to gather information or frame a story. Her manipulative behavior underscores her determination to succeed in her career, even if it means bending the truth. She is willing to sensationalize stories, manipulate information, and create controversy to achieve higher ratings and recognition.

Brenda had been dedicating her efforts to a narrative about antiquities fraud. However, this story was taken off the national broadcasting lineup because Nancy had beaten her to the punch by breaking the story ahead of time. Brenda's bitterness about losing this story, which she invested a lot of effort in, contributed to her developing a personal vendetta against Nancy.

Seeking revenge, Brenda devises a plan to falsely implicate Nancy in the arson of a historic Town Hall. This cunning plan serves a dual purpose: satisfying Brenda's hunger for a national headline-worthy tale and eliminating Nancy from the picture, accomplishing two goals with a single move.

Brenda leaves notes for Nancy, luring her to Town Hall. She sets up a mechanism to trigger the fire as soon as Nancy arrives. Brenda creates the appearance that Nancy was present at the scene of the crime, strengthening the case against her. Brenda works to sway public opinion against Nancy and to create an atmosphere of suspicion and distrust. Brenda even plants the fire security key in Alexei's shop to divert suspicion. By creating a web of circumstances that suggest Nancy's involvement in the fire, manipulating evidence, and using her media platform to amplify the narrative of Nancy's guilt, Brenda effectively frames Nancy for the crime.

Ultimately, Brenda did manage to appear on the national news as video of her arrest was broadcast live and circulated throughout the entire country. Despite being imprisoned, she remains ambitious and has taken up a role on the weather news desk at Heights Regional Correction Center. Her determination suggests she might advance to the lead anchor desk over the next decade or two.

TONI SCALLARI

Antonia "Toni" Scallari is the proprietor of Scoop, an ice cream shop in River Heights. Beyond her business, she's also deeply engaged in local politics, currently serving as a city councilwoman. Toni is currently campaigning for re-election to the city council.

Toni's dual role in both business and politics underscores her desire for power and influence. Her involvement in city politics demonstrates that she is strategic and knows how to navigate the political landscape to achieve her goals. Toni maintains a practical and tough decision-making approach, prioritizing the greater good over fairness. She pressures law enforcement and believes fairness is a luxury in government. She's cautious and deflects damaging questions, in line with her careful political persona. Toni redirects conversations to her advantage and is mindful of her public image, meticulously choosing her words and actions to maintain a specific perception.

Despite being pragmatic and driven, Toni displays moments of empathy and personal connection. Her interactions with Bess highlight her ability to offer support and understand others, though she may have underlying motives. Toni adeptly manipulates situations and people, guiding conversations to her advantage without divulging too much information. Her exchange with Nancy showcases her manipulative skills, as she denies involvement while subtly shifting blame. When faced with serious accusations, she often dismisses them casually, making it hard for others to determine her sincerity.

Nancy's impressive image and achievements make Deirdre feel inadequate. While Deirdre often criticizes Nancy, there are moments where she seems to understand her. After a decade of experience, Alexei had faced numerous challenges and emerged victorious in solving cases. However, his success came to a halt when he exposed JP Bennington for fraudulent entry into City Hall. The powerful Bennington family accused Alexei of stealing their priceless antique magnifying glass, damaging his reputation. Despite his prior accomplishments, Alexei found himself ostracized and devoid of new cases. Alexei also lost his romantic partner, Maggie, due to these circumstances. Frustrated, he aspired to explore the world but was thwarted when Bennington smeared his image in the media, allowing Bennington to ascend politically. This event marked a turning point for Alexei, causing him to lose his credibility, friends, and trust within the community.

In the present day, Alexei Markovic owns Wardenclyffe Antiques and has become a recluse, seemingly bitter and deeply cynical. He harbors resentment and distrust towards the town and its people, particularly those in positions of power. His cynicism is rooted in the betrayal he experienced, leading him to doubt the fairness and integrity of the legal system, the media, and public opinion. Despite his gruff demeanor, Alexei still longs for vindication and justice. He's haunted by the false accusations and the destruction of his reputation. His attempts to prove his innocence reveal his determination to restore his name and regain the trust he lost.

Alexei's rough exterior often conceals his vulnerability. He's defensive when discussing his past or offering insight into his emotions. He uses sarcasm and wit as defense mechanisms, deflecting questions and attempting to keep others at bay. Alexei's experiences as a detective have granted him a wealth of knowledge about the town's history, its hidden secrets, and its complex web of relationships. Despite his fall from grace, he retains his investigative instincts and analytical thinking skills.

Alexei's conflicted feelings about River Heights are evident. He initially expresses deep love and attachment to the town, having grown up there and invested significant emotional energy in his cases. Despite his cynical outlook, Alexei demonstrates compassion and empathy towards Nancy Drew, recognizing the injustice she's facing. Surprisingly, the time capsule survived the fire at Town Hall, and inside it, JP Bennington's supposedly stolen magnifying glass was found, vindicating Alexei after many years. Alexei is on the path to receiving a formal pardon from Carson Drew and is visibly content. While he declined the idea of being a detective again, he's open to assisting when needed. The Town Hall will be replaced by a history museum, and Alexei might become the head curator.
