Steam overlay and Vortex (1.7.0.4 -> 1.7.0.3)

In this guide you will know how to enable Steam in-game features with your Fallout 3 mods which are managed via Vortex.

Introduction

Obviously, you have installed all the mods you need and tried to launch Fallout 3 via Vortex, all mods works, but Steam can't see your game, despite the fact that if you launch Fallout NV or Skyrim in the same way, everything works perfectly fine.

So here's what you need to do.

Steps

1. Go to the folder where the game is installed
   
   
2. Create an empty text document named as FalloutLauncher and fill it with:
   
   
   [Custom]
   Name=Fallout 3
   Path="C:\Program Files\Black Tree Gaming Ltd\Vortex\Vortex.exe"
   Arguments="G:\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 3 goty\fose_loader.exe"
   
   
   In "Path" paste location of your Vortex.exe file.
   
   In "Arguments" paste location of your fose_loader.exe file.
   (It's located in the Fallout 3 game folder)
   
   
   
   
   
3. Change file format from .txt to .ini
   
   
4. In the library Open Fallout 3 properties and add to Launch options:
   
   
   --start custom
   
   
   
   
   
5. After that you must launch Fallout 3 in Steam, it will work with both mods and overlay.
   
   

Conclusion

You don't need to launch the game in Vortex, moreover, you don't need to run the Vortex itself to play the game w/ mods.
Still, you need it to manage mods of course.

UPD 2024

Tried to play Fallout 3 and encountered a problem that the game starts with an overlay and all the Steam functions, but Steam itself doesn't display that you are playing the game (and doesn't count the hours too).
What worked for me was closing the game and launching it again, then everything worked as it should.
