Modding Guide for 2023 (OUTDATED USE THE NORMAL MOD MANAGER))
By A Certain Pole
Modding this game can be a bit awkward, especially with the latest update. I am providing this guide in hopes to teach and assist those attempting to mod this game in this day & age.

Getting Started
First of all, you will need to do a few things before actually installing any mods. As of July 2023, the game's own mod manager does not function. To remedy this, please follow Aquallax's guide here.

This will restore the game's mod manager to it's original function. If you plan on only utilizing Steam Workshop mods, this is for the most part sufficient. However, some more complex mods, or using several large mods can cause issues due to the game's mod manager not allowing you to change the load order.

Thankfully, there is a solution for this. There is a third-party Mod Manager created by MitchTWC that allows you to do the following:
  • Load Mods and launch the game.
  • Change the load order of Mods
  • Create profiles of which you can use to easily sort mods and presets (Think of this as a way to have different sets for Vanilla, FOTS, and Multiplayer)

To install this, follow the link here.[sourceforge.net]
Once there, select "ModManagerV2.0".
Why? Well, the 3.0 Version does not support TWS2.
After the zip installs, extract the .exe to anywhere (Desktop is recommended) and launch. You will now need to select your game's directory.

Now before you proceed to start installing mods here comes one of the primary hurdles...
Managing the Mod Managers
So you now have two mod managers! Sounds cool right? Wrong, unfortunately, one of the primary issues using this method is the fact the game will always launch its own manager so long as it exists in the directory, even when the game is launched from the third-party one.

Another catch with the third-party MM is that it cannot install Workshop mods.

Here is the solution I utilize:
  1. Any and all mods you wish to install from the workshop should be subscribed to, and then launch the game through Steam. The game's MM will now install your mods, and they will be ready to be loaded.
  2. Close the MM, and game should it launch, and now enter your game's directory, and delete it's own MM (I recommend saving a copy somewhere else.).
  3. Now open the third-party MM to organize your mods as you wish and enjoy the game!
  4. If you want to install any new mods via Steam, return the game's MM to the directory and repeat steps 1-3.

After all this, you should now be able to enjoy the game's full modding experience!
