New York City Subway R33 "Redbird"

Description
St. Louis Car Company R33 "Redbird"

The R33 was a New York City Subway car model built by St. Louis Car Company from 1962 to 1963. The cars were also referred to as R33MLs (R33 Main Line) to distinguish them from the R33S cars. A total of 500 cars were built, and the first R33s entered service on Nov. 15, 1962. They were the first A Division cars to be retrofitted with air conditioning, between 1972 and 1982. They were also the second subway cars to feature the famous Redbird scheme, with red bodies, black end signs and silver roofs. The fleet was overhauled between 1987 and 1991. The R33s were replaced in the early 2000s with the delivery of the R142 and R142A cars, with the last train running on April 20, 2003. After being retired, most R33s were sunk into the ocean as artificial reefs, but several cars have survived. Car 9075 was previously on display outside Queens Borough Hall in Kew Gardens, Queens but was closed in 2015. Afterwards, it was used for movie shoots until it was auctioned off and sold in 2022.

Although R33MLs were built as married pairs, this car is a single unit with operating cabs at both ends.

Setup and Operation
The cab at the rear is referred to the B end, while the cab at the front is the A end.

-Head into the B end cab
-Turn on the Main Lights, Marker and End Lights, Battery, and Motor-Generator switches
-Head to the A end cab
-Turn on the Main Lights, Marker and End Lights, and Compressor switches
-Turn on the Door Controls switch in the A end if you will be operating doors from that car. Same thing for the Passenger Intercom switch (cables must be run between the couplers of cars if you want the intercom to work throughout the entire train)
-Open the A end storm door. Near the top left turn on the Car Lights Key and release the handbrake.
-In the motorman's seat, look near the floor and insert the reverser and brake handles.
-Move the brake handle one notch to the left and the Main Reservoir will build pressure
-Once Main Reservoir pressure is >100 the brakes may be released. Move the brake handle all the way to the left (see below on how the brake handle works). Brake Pipe will show 0 psi when brakes are released and 90 psi when they are fully applied.
-Set the reverser to F or R and then increase the Main Controller (throttle).

If you are configuring a trailing unit, follow all of these steps up to and including releasing the handbrake. Do not insert the reverser or brake handles because this will prevent the car from receiving controls from its master.

Brake System
The brake handle has 3 notches or zones:
-The leftmost zone is Service, where the handle can be linearly moved to control service braking. All the way to the left is brakes released and all the way to the right is an 80 psi brake application.
-The middle notch to the right of service is Max Brake. This applies a 85 psi brake application.
-The last notch to the right of Max Brake is Emergency. This applies a 90 psi brake application and also dumps the Main Reservoir. After emergency is applied, the brakes can only be released by moving the brake handle to either Max Brake or any position in Service. The compressor must also be on.

Door Operations
The doors may get stuck in lower physics settings if you are running a long train

The Door Controls switch must be on in any car where you are planning to operate the doors. The doors can be operated from either the A or B cab using the panel to the right of the side window. You must turn on the door key and then the operation panel will work.
