How to get a custom death screen

This guide will show you how to put your own custom video into the game!!!

How to locate your current death screen file

Right click on "Escape the Backrooms" in your games tab and go to Manage > Browse Local Files.

Next you want to navigate to:
EscapeTheBackrooms > EscapeTheBackrooms > Content > Movies

The video will be named "Eject". I would recommend copying/saving this video to your desktop or somewhere else safe in case you want to revert these changes later. Another option is naming it something else so the game will not be able to locate it, and you can store it with the rest of the game files.

Uploading your own file into the game

I have done some testing and troubleshooting for this part. What I have found is that you can only use mp4 files.

The good news is that any length of mp4 so far has been accepted as a death screen. Not-so-bad news, the game will not play the whole video, only five seconds. However, it plays regardless and also bug-free.

YOU MUST RENAME YOUR CUSTOM VIDEO TO "Eject.mp4" FOR THIS TO WORK

None of the 'mov', 'webm', etc. extensions have worked for me so far. They all produce this:

If you can get it to work that would be awesome, just post a comment of which file type you used so I can update the guide. I doubt it would work however because the developer most likely used a line of code that has a direct reference to the file "Eject.mp4". We'll see...

What a failed upload looks like

This is an example of what it looks like if you upload a file that isn't an mp4:

The "Eject" file will become an exception, if not an mp4, and handled accordingly. It should not crash the game, but it also will not show at all.

dont change the name just keep it as Eject!

here's a couple things that I've found to be causing problems, bc mine still works as of today:
- changing a file to mp4 from something else (.mov, .webm, etc.) doesn't work if you simply rename it in files, you have to use an online converter to do that
- make sure (if using windows) that you have the option "file name extensions" enabled to ensure the file you're using is really an mp4 (you might have to look up how to do that)

other than that, idk. I could only assume it's user error on your end bc it's worked for me and many others already. best of luck!
