So, What the Heck is Crouching?!
To start things off, let's explain what the crouch mechanic actually is. By holding down the default key for crouching, CTRL, your character will crouch, obviously. While in a crouching state, your hitbox will be shrunken down, and you will move 66% slower, and in the case of you being a Heavy with a revved up minigun, you won't move at all.
Simple Techniques for Dummies
Let's cover some simple techniques involving crouching which even your deceased great-great-grandpa could do (that is, if he was still alive).

Shrinking your Hitbox
Crouching allows you to manipulate and shrink your hitbox. This can allow you do things like hide behind the Payload cart or your Sentry Gun, or move your head hitbox to avoid being headshot by a Sniper.

Being a Friendly
Crouching is widely known among (us) the TF2 community as a sign of being a friendly. Whether you just want to mess around as a Hoovy, or desperately need to get out of a situation where you're almost guaranteed to die, using crouching for this purpose works 9 times out of 10.

Crouch Jumping
This one is pretty simple. Simply hold crouch and jump at the same time. Just remember that crouching, then jumping is better than the vice versa.

Rocket Jumping
By crouching when rocket jumping, your jumps will go significantly farther than normal. This is an essential technique for anyone playing Soldier, Demoman, and even a Pyro using the Detonator.
C-Tapping
how
Crouch, then release the crouch button. When you're "un-crouching", jump. If you did this correctly, your jump won't go as high as normal. By incorporating this technique into a rocket jump, due to your hitbox being closer to the explosion, you'll go higher than a regular crouching rocket jump. A normal rocket jump will usually suffice, but this is still helpful for certain things like jump maps.
Species
This section will cover species. Although there are many species in the TF2 ecosystem, I will only be covering those which commonly use crouching.

The Hoovy
I have already briefly mentioned the Hoovy previously, but I'll mention them again here. Hoovies are peaceful creatures that can be seen lurking in many TF2 maps. They will usually be crouching, holding out a lunchbox item or melee weapon (usually the Holiday Punch), and will have silly cosmetics. Beware, however, as some types of Hoovies will pull out their desired Minigun and fire when attacked.

The Trolldier
Trolldiers are passive-aggressive species who fly around with their Rocket Jumper and shovel anyone who they don't like. I'm only putting them here because they rocket jump to get around, which involves crouch jumping.

Democrabs and Spycrabs
These are both passive crab-like species who roam around the map. Both of these creatures involve crouching to achieve their comical appearances;Democrabs simply hold an all-class weapon (or Persian Persuader occasionally) and crouch, and Spycrabs hold their disguise kit, look up, and crouch.
Conclusion
Thank you for reading through my guide! I hope this has helped you in one way or another, whether you're a tryhard Soldier looking to maximize their rocket jump distance or a friendly Hoovy looking to up their game.
