Uploading Avatars For Dummies <3
作者: Wanko
Just a guide I made to help fellow beginners in uploading avatars into VrChat. I just wanted to make this since a lot of people are paying others to log into their account and upload the avatar for them. I would like to stress that is NOT safe to do. Never give your password out to anyone and be wary of those who are unable to walk you through the upload process. They should not have to log into your account to do so. There are restrictions for those who can upload avatars but can be easily met with playtime.

I keep it updated here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/52368224/ where the PDF can be downloaded

Uploading Avatars
1. Download the Virtual Creator Companion (VCC) from https://vrchat.com/home/login. You
will need to log into Vrchat select Download then Download the Creator Companion.
VrChat’s VCC is set up to make the process easier and can migrate your projects to the
latest SDK. New projects start with the sdk pre installed! Make sure it is updated by
clicking the cogwheel and then selecting Check for Updates.

2. Then you'll need to install Unity Hub: https://unity.com/download. You'll then need to
create an account or login to Unity Hub. If Unity Hub is already installed you can skip to
step 6.

3. If you're on Windows it might ask for permission, go ahead and allow access. When
signing into Unity Hub it should open to a browser and you might get a prompt. Make
sure to check "Always allow" then open link

4. Install Unity Editor, you only need the personal license.

5. Once Unity Hub is installed you can close Unity Hub. Go back to VCC (Creator
Companion), hit "Unity Hub is installed".

6. In VCC click the button "Unity 2019.4.31f1" this is the version of Unity VRChat uses.

a. If VCC is unable to install it you can download and install from here:
https://unity.com/releases/editor/w.....-new/2019.4.31. I would click “Install this
version with Unity Hub” to have it pull the install from Unity Hub. Remember to
check “always allow”. Then “Open Link”.

b. You’ll want to make sure Web GL and Android are checked!
Visual Studio will be installed as well, none of the other addons are needed.

7. Now that everything is installed. Open VCC and hit “Create New Project”. Select
“Avatars” and name your project.
Everything is preselected for you at this step for now so go ahead and Open your project.

a. Some avatars may need additional packages such as LilToon or AudioLink. To
add them to your avatar project just drag and drop the package in the “Project”
tab once it is opened. Then hit import. You can also install the repository for
some projects directly into VCC. I recommend adding Gesture Manager.

Ex) https://lilxyzw.github.io/lilToon/#/
Select VRChat Creator Companion, check “Always allow to open links” then
“Open CreatorCompanion”

8. Now that the project is open, drag and drop your avatar package and hit import
If the avatar does not appear in the scene do not be alarmed. Go into the folder and
double click on the avatar or drag and drop it into the Hierarchy in the top left. Make sure
you drop the prefab (avatar model) in the Hierarchy where the Main Camera and Light
are shown. Your Hierachy will be the organization workspace for your avatar and the
Scene shows what is happening in your game world.

9. You’ll want to move the Main Camera in front of the Avatar. To move the Camera select
the Main Camera and use the tools at the top of your screen under the ToolBar. Use the
Move (four arrows) icon to move the Camera on the plane. Use the Rotate (two circular
arrows) to rotate the camera.

10. I recommend using Avatar Emulator and Gesture Manager to test your avatar before
upload!. To use these drop the packages into the Project and import. Select the Tools tab
in the Toolbar and select the Gesture Manager Emulator & Enable Avatars Emulator.

a. To use these you must be in Play mode and have the root of the prefab (your
avatar selected) You can now play with the Radial Menu and edit your avatar’s
expressions in the Lyuma AV 3 Script in the Inspector.

i. Make sure not to change anything in the VRC Avatar Descriptor!

b. You can now edit your avatar in Play mode to see different expressions.

11. Now select the VRChat SDK tab and click “Show Control Panel”. You will need to log
into VrChat.

12. Now that you are logged in go to the builder and hit Build and Publish for Windows.
If your avatar is for Quest you will need to click “Switch Build Target to Android”.

13. It should now begin building an asset bundle. Once complete you will see a screen like
this. Name your avatar and give it a description. The Content Warnings are an old
feature in VRChat and will not do anything, you can ignore these. Make sure Private is
selected if your avatar creator has asked you to do so.
Now hit upload and enjoy your avatar!!!
How To Set Avatar Poses For ThumbNail
1. Once the avatar and necessary shaders are added in the Hierarchy menu in the
top right of Unity click the dropdown for the avatar. Make sure this is all done in
Play mode!

2. Navigate to the part of the body you would like to move. In my case I would like
to move the arms to make a cutesy pose. Click on the body part to be moved.

3. You’ll want to make sure the rotate tool is selected. Now rotate the body part in
the position you would like. The rotate tool may be located on the toolbar in the
top. You can undo any unwanted movements using ctrl + z

4. You can change your avatar’s expressions by clicking “Body” in the Hierarchy
then opening the “BlendShapes” dropdown. There should be sliders that allow
you to change the expressions.
How To Add Backgrounds To Your Thumbnail
1. First select your image and drop it anywhere in the Assets folder

2. Click the image and change the texture type to “Sprite”

3. Drag and drop the image onto the Hierarchy in view of the Camera!

4. You can also select the Main Camera and change the “Clear Flags” to “Solid Color” if
you prefer.

5. The Camera can be rotated and moved in the environment. The FoV can be changed by
clicking the camera and moving the FOV slider.
Adding Textures To Props / Accessories
Sometimes you may encounter assets with FBX or broken textures. Or you may want to create
custom textures.

1. Right click on an empty space in the Project panel and go to Create > Material
Name the Material anything you’d like.

2. Navigate to where your asset’s textures are stored. Drag the texture to the Inspector for
the Material you just created and place it in the “Albedo” parameter.

a. If you are using Shaders you will need to make sure to select it from the Shader
dropdown! - KebrVr

3. You can now take that material and drag it onto the asset requiring the texture. If you
have an FBX you want to export and make edits to, there is a quick way to add the
textures. Click on the FBX. Go to the Materials tab in the Inspector.

a. Change the Location option to “Use Embedded Materials” then drop the Material
to the respective parameter. Remember to click Apply!! FBX should not be used
to upload your avatar!!. This is a file to be open in a 3D rendering tool such as
blender to edit the asset.

4. You can also use this to add more depth to your materials! For example I have this
medal collar asset that I would like to add some roughness to. Luckily the Heart Collar
comes with textures. I recommend using the rougher textured files in the Albedo and
dropping a color or texture into Metallic.
In this case I used the Roughness in albedo and Metallic in the metallic parameter to
create this chain look.

5. Have fun playing around with the textures to get different effects!
I ended up going with the effect below.
Odd Issues: Prop / Accessory Origin Off Center
Sometimes you get assets that have their origin (pivot/position) off center. This can be fixed by
taking the FBX and uploading it to a 3D render application.

For this example we will use Blender and import the FBX in.

From there right click on the asset go to Set Origin > Origin to Geometry. Go to File > Export >
FBX. Remember to remove the Camera and Light before exporting!!

To fix this in Unity you can open the asset in the hierarchy and editing the Position in the
Inspector to 0
Notes
● The Game Dev with Unity is not necessary with Visual Studio but might as well
grab if you’re interested in avatar or world creation.

● To move in Unity or Blender hold the middle mouse button and drag to move

● Hold right mouse to to move the camera, you can use WASD while the right
mouse is held down to move the camera freely - KebrVr

● Sometimes assets come with an FBX. Do not drop the FBX into the hierarchy!
Else you will have to set the bones and textures yourself! - KebVr

Yeah just drop the file you want in the project. You can create a plane or just set the pic as a sprite. Then you can drop it into the scene!

But that's if you want to just use it as a picture for your avatar.
If your trying to upload an avatar that's just a picture of yourself im not too sure honestly.

Hi. Do you know if there is a way to simply upload a photo?
I would prefer to upload an actual photo of me. 😁
