The Abbasid Palace at Baghdad

For hundreds of years, the banner of the Caliphate was held by the Abbasid dynasty. Despite periods of growth and decay, the dynasty was central to the Islamic world of the middle ages, and fostered the development of science, art, history, geography, and other academic subjects, and is still looked upon fondly by Muslims until today. This art piece depicts the Abbasid Palace in the round city of Baghdad in the early 13th century, immediately preceding the events of the Mongol raid on the city, which would reduce it to ashes.
