The LT-38 tank was developed in 1938 by the CHKD-Prague concern under the designation TNHP. It was distinguished by a simple, rational design. In its undercarriage, four large-diameter support rollers were used from each side, interlocked in pairs on leaf springs. The drive wheels with the transmission were located in the front of the body. To facilitate the repair of the transmission in the field, a large hatch was made in the front of the hull. The armament consisted of a 37 mm semi-automatic cannon and two 7.92 mm machine guns.

A six-cylinder liquid-cooled carburetor engine was used as the power plant. Initially, the tank was supplied to the Czechoslovak army, and after the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Germany, its production continued for the needs of the Wehrmacht. Until 1942, 1,411 such vehicles were delivered to the Wehrmacht under the Tank 38(t) brand. But the tank became particularly famous due to the fact that its simple, reliable chassis was widely used to create a wide variety of self-propelled artillery
