Background

Ongezellig takes place in a fictional country known as 'the Netherlands', also sometimes referred to as "Holland". In this country, people speak a bastardization of German and English. Bzw. the dutch (what people from this country are called) word for 'octopus', takes after the German 'Tintenfisch', meaning 'ink fish', and so the dutch word is 'inktvis'.
The Netherlands are a very barbaric and tribalistic. This can be seen in many scenes where character origins are mentioned. The backgrounds are as follow:
Coco is from South Africa (Studio Massa couldn't think of an actual country in Africa so just put a geographical region)
Maya is from a borderland known as Brabant, contested by the Netherlands and the Flemisch
Mymy is from Japsterdam, a city in the northern province of Drenthe

Other background information is less important to understanding the plot. Mymy has a fascination with the fictional company, the VOC (stands for viele orangene Currywurst). Maya enjoys a traditional dutch snack 'pepernoten'. And the teacher enjoys a kind of Kinderschnaps, rather than what many would assume is an alchohic drink.

Other than just lore knowledge you must have, Ongezellig is also influenced by many online subcultures, specifically 4chan. In order to fully understand the humour one must spend 14 hours a day browsing /r9k/.

The Show Itself

After researching all there is to understand the lore, you can begin the easiest step of this guide, watching the show. You'll want to start with Deel 1+2, Deel 3, Deel 4, Deel 5, and finally Deel 6, the finale.
