SecuROM Removal Guide for Borderlands
De PALADiN
The latest patch didn't quite remove SecuROM properly. Here's a guide that shows the files that need to be deleted and how to remove SecuROM if you somehow had it previously installed via this game.

What happened?
The patch that was released for Borderlands on July 28 claimed to have removed SecuROM from the game and the first 2 DLCs (Zombie Island of Dr Ned and Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot). However, looking through the game files and the first run installation scripts has proved that SecuROM can still be installed (even if the DLCs don't actually use the activation data that gets installed).
Important note regarding "Verify game files" (UPDATED)
After deleting the files and folders listed in the next section, do not use Steam's "Verify game files" function otherwise the files will download again.

UPDATE: With the update that enabled online MP through Steamworks, the "Verify game files" function no longer redownloads the SecuROM files.
Files and folders to delete
Here are the files and folders to delete from the Borderlands folder (default location: SteamApps\common\borderlands). These are sorted by type (folders, files and install scripts) and are formatted by path inside your Borderlands installation folder..

Folders

Binaries\DLCSetup
Binaries\DLCSetup2

Files

Binaries\ALF.dll
Binaries\DFA.dll
Binaries\DFA_top.bmp
Binaries\DFA_side.bmp
Binaries\lang_dfa.ini

Install scripts

8990_install.vdf (this calls the SecuROM install program inside Binaries\DLCSetup).
40940_install.vdf (this calls the SecuROM install program inside Binaries\DLCSetup2)
I already have SecuROM on my PC from this game!
There is a way to remove SecuROM completely from your system. Thanks to Goteki-45 on the old Steam forums for providing the instructions.

Original removal guide link: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1057303

Important notice

Following the upcoming instructions will cause you to lose SecuROM license information for all games that use SecuROM. This will, in turn, cause you to burn into any activation limits that are implemented. If you have a Revoke tool available for any SecuROM protected games you may have, use that first.

You can find out more on revoke tools (and appropriate download links) at http://support.securom.com.

What you need

First up, you'll need the SecuROM removal tool.
https://support.securom.com/removaltool.html

After that, you'll need a utility called RegDelNull.
http://technet.microsoft.com/sysinternals/bb897448.aspx

Instructions

1. Download the SecuROM removal tool from the link in the previous section.
2. Extract the contents of the removal_tool.zip file to your HDD and run SecuROM Remover.exe.
3. Follow the prompts in the removal wizard. You'll notice that some registry keys won't get removed. We'll fix that next.
4. Download RegDelNull from the link in the previous section and extract the contents of the RegDelNull.zip file to a convenient folder that you can easily remember.
5. Open a Windows Command Prompt window (WinKey+R > cmd). If you're using Windows Vista or newer, make sure to run Command Prompt as Administrator (press Ctrl+Shift+Enter).
6. With Command Prompt open, navigate to the folder where you extracted RegDelNull using the cd command. If you need any assistance using the command, type cd /? to get a primer.
7. Now that you've navigated to where you extracted RegDelNull, type regdelnull HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SecuROM -s and hit Enter.
8. Follow the onscreen prompts as RegDelNull executes. This process shouldn't take too long.
9. Once RegDelNull finishes its task, open RegEdit (WinKey+R > regedit). On Windows Vista and later, click Yes on the UAC prompt that appears after you press Enter.
10. With RegEdit open, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SecuROM and delete the entire SecuROM key.

Congratulations! SecuROM has now been completely removed.

Installed this game in fall 2015 on Windows 8.1. Can confirm that the files and folders (DLCSetup 1 and DLCSetup2) don't exist on current versions.

The General Protection Fault errors are different. This guide won't help in resolving those.

Would this help with the Protection Fault Error?
