Chapter 1: The Basics
The most fundamental thing about the Medic is the Medi-Gun. It's what makes the Medic, a TF2 Medic. As a TF2 Medic, you have three things: A Medi-Gun, a needle gun , and a bonesaw of sorts
. These are all essential to the Medic's survival and if he can help his team. The needl gun is used for long range defense. I reccomend the Crusaders Crossbow. It heals teammates and damges foes. The Medi-Gun is used for healing your teammates. I reccomend the stock medi-gun for all around purposes, but the Kritzkreig for when your team needs to make a push. For bonesaws, I reccomend the most common which is the Ubersaw. For each hit you get, you get 25% uber which is extremely helpful and good for defense. If you're about protecting yourself rather than gaining uber, I reccomend using the stock bonesaw which swings faster and more often than the Ubersaw.
These are the basic items, from personal experience, that I reccomend using. You can be unique and flexible and use your own style too; we're all different.
Chapter 2: The dos and don'ts
Medic has one simple job: Heal and stay alive. There is a derrogative term used in TF2 about Medics who focus on killing rather than helping or healing; they're called 'Battle Medics' sometimes 'Combat Medics.' Typically, a newbie Medic tries to get kills with the needle/ Syringe Gun or Bonesaw and doesn't actually heal or help his/her team. Here are some dos and don'ts:
Dos:
1. Uber (Ueber if you're Deutsch) is essential to ANY team's success. You build Uber by healing teammates with the Medi-Gun and when it reaches 100%, you hit your designated button for it (Typically Mouse click 2). Use it when possible.
2. Always heal, regardless of your health, you should continue to heal teammates. Even if you die, every little health counts in a match; pub or Highlander.
3. It's better to use your Uber than to have wasted it by being too late. If you have Uber and you're tyring to make a push, use it unless you can do without it.
4. Don't be afraid to retreat. If there is like 2 Pyros, a Soldier, and a Heavy, don't take them on; that's suicide. Remember, Medic is about support and keeping your team alive. Medic is not an offensive class.
5. Heal everybody you see: Snipers, Spies, Medics, Soldiers, everybody. A healthy and overhealled team can do wonders.
Now some don'ts:
1. Never be a pocket medic; unless you're make a push that needs a pocket medic. Healing only one person is never a good option. If you're only healing one person throught the match, your teammates cannot help make pushes that are essential to objectives. Always heal others like Scouts, Medics, Spies, etc.
2. Like I said in 4 of dos, don't treat Medic as an offensive class. Medic is a support class and it is supportive of either: defensive or offensive classes. Never try to take a team on as Medic; 99% of the time, you'll fail and probably get a lot of negative feedback.
3. Never heal everyone you meet. It could be a Spy. Be sure to spycheck your teammates before healing unless you're in battle, but still keep an eye out for spies trying to get either: healed or trying to backstab you.
Chapter 3: Medikits and staying alive
The best Medic is one that stays alive. How do you do this when you're targeted at for healing? SImple answer: Medikits. Also, this is a tip for anyone else who plays another class: Don't take Medikits unless you really have to. They're really, sometimes, the only thing that can help a Medic when he's like on fire or under fire. As a Medic, though, you also have a special ability that seperates you from other classes: You heal 3 hp every couple seconds. To stay alive as a Medic, always heal from behind or away from where the enemy can target and shoot you. Doing this will help you stay alive longer and help more teammates.
Final Chapter: Your role in gameplay and how to fulfill it
Important final tip to remember about Medic: You and your healing target cannot cap or push the cart if you're being charged with Uber. Here are some last tips for becoming a better Medic and these include on how to be a Medic in each different game mode:
Attack/ Defense: being a Medic is essential here for defense or offense. On the offensive side, you must keep your teammates healed and alive well, and long, enough to cap all the points. You must also use your Uber to counter the defense's Uber or engie nest. On the defensive, Medic is vital also. As a defesive Medic, you must keep your teammates healed and alive so they can stop the offensive from capturing all the points. Using Uber here at critical times is also crucial. Since you're not capping, you can use the Uber near a Control Point when needed.
Control Points: in this game mode, there will show which side who has the better Medic. In this game mode, you should continuously heal others and make sure they're in good health whether you're capping or defending points.
Payload: like Attack/ Defense, you must be an offensive Medic and help your team push the cart. Using Uber can help prevent Red from stopping you but it also prevents you from pushing it. As a Red Medic on Payload, you must make sure your team is healthy so you can stop Blu from pushing the cart. Using Ubers here is extremely critical.
Payload Race: whether you're on Red or Blu, you must be a defensive and offensive Medic. You must heal your teammates and make sure they're able to push the cart and prevent the other team from pushing theirs. Uber is somwhwat important here, but not as much as other game modes.
KOTH: Medics are a team's lifeline on KOTH maps. To be a good Medic here you must: make sure your team is constantly buffed and healed and Ubered when you must turn defensive. Also, make sure to heal other Medics or Englie because they are as valuable.
Special delivery: a Medic here can be defensive or offensive. If you're on the offensive, I'd advise healing whoever is on the platform and everyone around you, of course. For a defensive Medic, make sure you heal your crucial defensive players like Engineers, Heavies, Demomen, Soldiers, and whoever else.

Final tip: Even though Heavies are a popular pocket, and are good at pushes, ALWAYS heal Soldiers, Demomen, and Scouts. Don't just heal Heavies; this seems to be a common rookie Medic mistake.
