How to ACTUALLY talk to Mirror Dwellers
By metronome
Mirror Dwellers are the vast majority of VRChat. Here's an actual, non-satire guide on how to approach Mirror Dwellers. It's also more or less a guide on how to start a conversation and pick up on hints that someone does or doesn't want to have a conversation with you.

(Even though this is more or less serious, please view this as being exaggerated and stupidified for the sake of comedy. Also, take it with a grain of salt.)

This is NOT a Guide created solely for you to spread hate and bullsh*t on others. Get a grip of yourself. You're getting upset at people staring into a virtual mirror.

If you are here solely to leave a negative comment, get out. Everyone else, happy reading and i'm sorry if i you have to read immature commentors cry their hearts out because i didn't delete their comments yet.
What are Mirror Dwellers?
First things first. What are Mirror Dwellers, and most importantly, Why?

Mirror Dwellers are VRChat players who spend the majority of their time in a world standing in front of a mirror, you will see them in front of one more often than not. But why is that?

Despite popular belief, this behavior is not explained with narcissism.
Mirror Dwellers like to see themselves move in VR, and it's also a reassurance to know and see that they are moving correctly. VR is a fascinating concept, being able to embody your character of choice, naturally, this captivating scenario will keep your focus on the visuals and movement of your Avatar. Seeing how you can control it's every move and move in specific ways. Plus, if they're roleplayers/actors they'd want to make sure that, what they are doing is visually correct.
How to approach Mirror Dwellers
Mirror Dwellers aren't hostile. The type of people as a whole are actually very chill and approachable. Sure there is a hypocrite here and there, but every player group has those.

The best thing to do is to stand close to the mirror yourself. Don't worry, it won't kill you. Neither will the Dwellers.

You can observe your target for a moment, see if they are busy, afk, maybe read their bio to see if you can find out helpful info to start a conversation with (i.e their Pronouns, if they are mute or not and so on.)

Once you are more or less convinced that you are free to approach, go right ahead and greet them. Depending on the player, the response might be different. Here's how to respond to each possibility.

- "Hello/Hi (etc)"

They have greeted you back, meaning they are very much open and ready to start a conversation with you! You may proceed with whatever you wanted to approach them about.

- *waves*

This person seems to be mute, or not very vocal. You still have grabbed their attention successfully and can start a conversation with them regardless.

- "..."

Silence, indicating that they are either waiting for you to state your business or they're not really up to talk at the moment.

- "No."

They don't want to talk right now, respect their choice and move on.

- "Bye."

Comedians, responding to "Hi" with "Bye" tickles their ego just enough to make them think they're funny. Feed into their joke to perhaps bond over your mutual lack of humor or continue with whatever you wanted to talk to them about.

- "HIIIII"

You've found an extrovert! A very rare breed these days, they are very much very excited to talk to you! Start a conversation, they will be your best friend now, you shall have soft tacos later.

- "F**k off/Shut up (etc)"

Aight Petrisha, no need to make it obvious that you're on your period. Leave them be, they're going to start throwing slurs at your head if they feel annoyed by you.
Misc Notes
Some extra things that you should take note of.

- Mirror Dweller behavior does NOT vary from fandom to fandom. It's a person to person variation.
- Mirror Dwellers can be found in any world that contains a mirror, various fandoms, Avatars and so on.
- The player type itself is not to be stereotyped, as the behavior and reactions heavily depends on the type of person you're approaching.
- No, furries are not worse than others. Stop sh**ting on fandoms you dislike and go touch some grass.
- No, you are not allowed to touch them unprompted unless their bio/status says they're okay with it.
- No, this is not a "go harass mirror dwellers" card.
- Your social incompetence is not the fault of people staring into mirrors all day.

(I cannot be held reliable for the high chance of people getting offended after reading this, if you take it personal that means it applies to you, good day!)

@G master returns I won't report you because you say you don't like mirror dwellers. If you use your eyes and read what I actually said, you would come to the conclusion that I delete and report comments who INSULT mirror dwellers and beyond.

(I read the whole guide, good read)
I personally never understood the whole "why look at a mirror 24/7??" mentality.
Like, I know I'm looking at the mirror, but in doing so, I'm looking at YOU, and not only that, but the entire room and all my surroundings, as well.
For me, using mirrors to observe my surroundings is me making sure I respond to those approaching me and to make sure I can see not only them, but also anyone else wanting to join.
If I'm just getting in VR to stare dead-eyed, 2 inches away at someone all day, I might not see someone come up behind me.
Being in a circle of people in public lobbies is also bad on my anxiety, because I cannot see them if they're behind me. Having mirrors (especially personal ones always on) helps ease that worry/concern. It's more of a social tool for me than it is just a gimmick thing.
