Laurentic-Class Ocean Liners

Here is the SS Laurentic of the White Star Line.

The first Laurentic of the White Star Line was originally built for the Dominion Line as the SS Alberta in response to their rivals, the Allan Line (which built SS Victorian, the first turbine-powered ocean liner). When the Dominion Line was bought by the International Mercantile Marine Company, they transferred her, and her sister SS Albany to the White Star Line during construction. Alberta was renamed and completed as the Laurentic, and Albany was completed as the Megantic. The 2 ships also served as test platform for different engine arrangements to decided which one was best for the upcoming Olympic-Class liners, with Laurentic's engines being picked. Laurentic had 2 triple-expansion steam engines and 1 low-pressure steam turbine driving 3 propellers, while Megantic had 2 quadruple-expansion engines driving 2 propellers. The 2 ships would serve the Liverpool to Canada routes until the first World War. In 1910, murderer Hawley Crippen fled on board the SS Montrose, and Chief inspector Walter Dew chased Montrose onboard the Laurentic, bringing Crippen back to England in custody onboard the Megantic. During WW1, Laurentic served as an armed merchant cruiser and sank in 1917 after striking 2 mines with the loss of 354 men, most of them dying due to hypothermia. Many salvage attempts have been made on her wreck, from her bells, to one of her 6-inch guns, and even the gold from her wreck. Her sister Megantic survived the war and was sold to Japan in 1933 for scrap.
