Oceanic-Class Ocean Liners

Here is the Oceanic-Class ocean liners, the first passenger ships built for the White Star Line!

The class consisted of 6 ships, Oceanic, Atlantic, Baltic, Republic, Adriatic, and Celtic, all completed through 1870 and 1872. Even though the class was quickly outdated after 4 years, the class revolutionary in passenger ship design at the time, providing the basis for future WSL ships and other ocean liners. Oceanic served with the WSL from 1871 to 1875, when she was chartered by the Occidental and Oriental Steamship Company, and scrapped in 1895. Her most notable event being when she collided with the SS City of Chester in 1888, sinking the Chester. The second ship, Atlantic, served with the WSL for only 3 years, and she sank on April 1st, 1873 after striking rocks off Nova Scotia with the loss of over 500 people. Atlantic would be the worst maritime disater until 1898 when the French liner La Bourgogne sank in a collision, and would be the worst disaster for the WSL until the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Baltic served until 1889 and was sold to the Holland America Line and renamed Veendam. Veendam was sunk in 1898 in a collision, with all on board saved. Republic served until 1889 when she was also transferred to the Holland America Line and renamed Maasdam. She was sold in 1902 to an Italian company and named Vittoria (and later renamed Città di Napoli) for use as a migrant ship for Italians wanting to go to America. She was used in 1908 to house victims of the Messina earthquake, and was scrapped in 1910. The last two ships, Adriatic and Celtic, were built to a slightly modified design, and thus being a little longer than the previous 4 ships (Adriatic would be largest ship of the class in tonnage). Adriatic was involved in 4 collisions and even crashed into the New York piers in 1889, being decommissioned and scrapped in 1899. The final ship, Celtic, served with the WSL until 1893 when she was transferred to the Thingvalla Line, being scrapped in 1898. Celtic is mostly known for her collision with another White Star Liner, the SS Britannic in 1887, with heavy damage to her and Britannic.

Includes bodygroup names for all of the 6 six ships, even includes "Pacific" and "Arctic", the original names for Baltic and Celtic respectively (they were changed to avoid association with 2 Collins Line ships that were lost, with SS Arctic lost in a collision, and SS Pacific vanishing in the Atlantic.)
